Help. Diesel tachometer issues

Postby black start » September 29th, 2012, 1:19 pm

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=462582&p=6548211#p6548211

Good day. As the topic says, I require help getting the tachometer to work on my Nissan b13. The car was originally a gasoline (ga15ds) but was converted to a diesel (cd20). A 90% complete conversion was done. All mechanicals are original diesel. The problem is that I have is that the tachometer never worked and I am now trying to get it sorted out. The car has the original gasoline instrument panel but I know the diesel panel varies from this a little bit.

What I would like to know is what I have to do to get the tachometer on the instrument panel to work. I do not wish too install an aftermarket one so please do not recommend this.

I know diesel output signal is a pair of wire on the pump but can I attach these wires directly to the panel or is there some sort of circuit for signal processing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I posted here as well because I know there are a lot of experienced diesel mechanics and electricians on this forum in particular so I was hoping someone could help me out.

Thank you,

thanks again sliderz.

I already spoke to anil but he said he was unsure of the wiring and he had never done the conversion. I will message speedy and see what comes up.

I already tried taking the wires from the pump and connecting it to the ip in the way the gasoline works but it was a shoot and a miss. I'm guessing either the signal goes through some sort of signal processing so that it can be read b the ip or maybe the oem diesel ip circuitry is different such that it would be able to interpret the signal from the pump.

*sigh* makes me wish i was doing electrical instead of mechanical eng :(

yea ah reach... right boss hear wat goin on... the original IP in your B13... will not work.. gas tach and diesel tachs work with different signals.. your best option really is to get an aftermarket... if you can source and IP from a Diesel B13.. that wud work also... on my L200... i source the instrument panel from a gas 4X4 L200 and the tach in it cud not work with the signal wires i ran from my Alternator... (thats where i getting my tach signal from right now)... went back by the guy and he gave me the diesel IP free cuz it was missing a fuel guage.. so i remove the fuel guage from the gas one and put it on the diesel one and installed that.. and now all is well..

if it is that you getting your tach signal from the fuel pump.. that can work also.. but not with the IP you currently have... you will get a wrong reading on the tach...
hope this helps.. let me know if u need to find out anything else...

^thanks for the help speedy, i guess I'll be on the looks for an oem diesel panel. I feel if I have to go aftermarket I'll just leave it be.

But just to clarify, once I have a diesel panel, I can just pin out the panel and attach the signal wire from the pump straight to the panel and it should work right?

I wouldn't mind an aftermarket one if the car didn't come with a tacho but I like the oem looks more. So I'll try my best to get this one to work and if not, I'll just leave it be. We are planning on selling the car at the beginning of next year anyways.

I have Toyota Corolla Diesel with the same problem as yours with the tachometer. Have you gotten a solution as yet?
