TTRC driver and 2012 Rally Trinidad Winner John ‘Penti’ Powell has teamed up with Jamaican co-driver Michael Fennell (Panton’s navi) to contest the FIA NACAM Rally Championship. The TRI/JAM team touched down in Mexico yesterday to do the first round of the Championship this weekend in Puebla Mexico.

Flying the T&T flag high, John “Penti” Powell has won Rally Trinidad 2012. After a 3 day battle mostly with Sean Gill of Barbados, Gary Gregg and Jeff Panton from Jamaica, John managed to climb his way to the top in his S14 WRC Impreza. Gill was leading most of the rally over the 3 days, however a tragic roll on Bronte in his WRC SX-4 cost Gill the entire rally.

From the Friday evening opening in the Hasely Crawford Stadium, one could see the hype was building, and service park area was full of life with some of the best Rally machinery in the Caribbean today. John “Penti” Powell co-driven by Jason Costelloe were victorious again at another TTRC championship rally event at Cedar Hill. Jason last co-drive for John when they both won at Rally Trinidad 2011. Latiff Khan again impressed taking top spot in group 3-A., Reyaz Mohammed for the 2nd consecutive rally took first place in group 2-4, and Donald Gopaul was the fastest 2 wheel drive on the day.

Maiden victories where the order of the day during the latest round of this year’s TTRC high speeds rally stages. The tricky Cedar Hill stage once again claimed many victims, with a host of cars running off throughout the day. The TTRC’s THA Rally Tobago 2011 speed stages event kicked off with the drivers having to go slow and cautious through the muddy stage, by lunchtime however the stage dried up nicely and the action increased,the team of John “Penti” Powell and Nick Telfer in the Mitsubishi Evolution 10 defended there title.

This event was action packed as it fell between TTRC’s biggest championship events for the year: Rally Trinidad & Rally Tobago. The Bronte stage is a mix of two stages that were used in Rally Trinidad 2011. The jump was back as well as the famous RedBull corner. There was an improved pit area so crews and spectators were close to the action.
