2015 Honda Civic Type R

Postby SRASC » October 5th, 2011, 11:10 am

The next Honda Civic Type R will not only be the fastest version yet – it’s tipped to be Honda’s first-ever turbo road car. And our sources in Japan say tuning expert Mugen is already well underway with development.

The Type R has already achieved cult status in the UK – Europe’s biggest hot hatch market – thanks to its combination of a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and aggressive styling. But in order to meet emissions regulations, this latest model will tweak the formula slightly.

Instead of the previous 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine, it will use a 2.0-litre turbo designed to comply with Euro V emissions regulations. A similar engine will feature in Honda’s 2012 British Touring Car Championship challenger.

Adding a turbo will give more torque lower in the rev range, so a higher gear can be used more often to boost efficiency. Stop-start is also likely to be fitted.

Just as VW hiked power with its latest Golf GTI, so Honda will increase the Type R’s output – but not by much. A figure of 210bhp would allow a 0-62mph time of less than 6.5 seconds and a top speed approaching 150mph.

Based on the new Civic seen at last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the Type R gets the standard car’s front grille, slim headlights and LED daytime running lights, although most of the bodywork will be uprated.

A front end with large mesh air intakes, a lower chin spoiler and chunky side skirts will boost the visual impact, while a rear diffuser and extended spoiler aim to increase stability at high speeds. Also helping the car’s balance in corners is the standard Civic’s longer, wider chassis; this should also improve ride comfort and grip.

Don’t expect refinement to match a Mercedes S-Class, however. The Type R has always been an extreme proposition and that’s the way it will stay.

The steering is set to be pin sharp, while the six-speed manual box will use a stubby gearlever for snappy changes. Plus, the suspension will be firm, to cope with track work as well as blasting down B-roads.

In a break from tradition that matches the turbocharged Ford Focus ST – a key competitor for the Type R – Honda will offer the car as a five-door only. Prices are expected to start from around £23,000 when it arrives in 2013.

Wonder what they'll do with the internals to compliment the boost (If the boos rumour is true).
And I'm still sceptical, because boost to reach 210hp? What kinda folly is that?

yeah thas no biggy. the compression might be dropped right down if its 2.0 turbo and still high revving to make 210hp. focus st does around the same thing with a 2.0 turbocharged engine. dont see why the had to go after the focus st that only has 225hp. should of gone after the focus rs making 300hp

They could have never gone after the Focus RS for many reasons...

Firstly, the RS costs about 28,000 pounds, definitely out of civic type-r pricing (in that market)
Also, to put down that amount of power, the RS uses a "Revo-Knuckle" system which is pretty complicated stuff all for the sake of avoiding torque steer.
Finally, the RS uses a 5 cylinder Volvo engine which was originally designed to be boosted anyway.. Those Volvo motors are built TOUGH, so it didnt take too much work for ford to get it up to 300..

What honda may have failed to notice however, is that the 2012 ST comes with 247hp... They need to be close to this figure to be taken seriously I think..
I actually like the idea of a small , low-boost turbo.. That way you can be on the boost from as low as 2000rpm, riding a wave of torque all the way to whatever redline they choose to set.. Possibly around 7000 (seeing as its turbo)..

So now any idiot will be able to get into a type r and go fast.

to me, the n/a engine would have added to teh racy feel of the older cars...and skilled drivers would be ab le to wring out the best performance while keeping rpms at redline.

And I'm still sceptical, because boost to reach 210hp? What kinda folly is that?

Lower boost/smaller turbo perhaps. But the key to look at would be torque.

I Really like this car because it's speed is amazing. It's look is great like sports car. it has good combination of a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and aggressive styling. and it's parts of the Type R gets the standard car’s front grille, slim headlights and LED daytime running lights.

The handle is on the C-pillar in black, its a conventional door. Still think this Euro hatch looks better then the American coupe.

looks great ... you guys have to remember a Type R is not just about power. The fine balance of the chassis, quick revving boosted engine and excellent gearbox will enable this Type R to hold it's own against competitors on the track. Would not be surprised if its better than the Focus and GTi.

Wonder why Honda didn't just use the RDX motor?

New details are starting to emerge about the 2013 Honda Civic Type-R.
Speaking with AutoCar, Honda's general manager of research and design said the model will have "special bumpers, wheels, spoilers and seats." The car will also feature a retuned suspension for improved handling.
As we have previously reported, the Civic Type-R is expected to use a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with approximately 210 hp (157 kW / 213 PS). It could enable the hatchback to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h).

Lets be honest though... A 2.0liter turbo doing 210 horsepower but a 13 year old F20 bluetop giving 200hp...

I just think that honda can do MUCH MUCH better than that.. Yes it will be a more accesible powerband with the turbo, but is there something we don't know about? Maybe the chassis is not really capable of much more (with the intended price range?)

Admittedly I am not much of a Honda fan lately as they alienated a large section of their enthusiast buyers.. I just don't feel like this is the way to win them back... Especially in light of far more intense competition not only from the japanese but from the koreans and even ford..

i think its time for Honda to make three diff classes of civic like Mitsu and Subby's. Like how they have the impreza, wrx, wrx, sti an like how mitsu has normal lancer, gsr (what i consider now as their gt model i guess), and Evo. it would make a more diverse market money and experience wise (driver capability)

hp isnt everything

how reliable/efficient is that 13yr old f20 compared to the newer engine system?

The is why alot of older honda men EVOlve..... they drive good :D

and why should honda build a 300+ HP FWD car.... then the million of aftermarket companies in the conspiracy with honda will have to close down.

when the EK9 came out was blah HP... and if classic had to sell it would have been close to 200k 10yrs ago .. how many people would have bought it ....
