Help Solving D15B Sputtering Issue

Postby K_Ali » September 18th, 2016, 3:57 pm

Hello Tuners,

I am having an issue with a 2 stage D15B Manual Engine.

The Vehicle starts and idles fine however sputters after a while when driving, If I put the Vehicle into Neutral by Pressing the Clutch I can Rev the engine fine without any Sputtering so you can say it sputters with load on the engine.

No check Engine Light

The following was done

1. New Fuel Filter
2. New Distributor
3. New Spark Plugs and Wires
4. Used MAP Sensor changed
5. Re-calibrate the TPS Sensor with Honda Specs
6. Cleaned Throttle Body

The problem is intermittent I am unsure what the issue is.

So give me your feedback.

I am thinking about changing the Fuel Pressure Regulator, Internal Fuel Filter attached to the Fuel Pump and maybe the Injector Relay.

Thanks in Advance.

Look for a vacuum leak or broken hose... it could be a simple issue.

Normally plugs are pre gapped in the box, it could be plug gap also... but check for any air leak first.

Thanks for your response X2

I looked at the main lines near the intake manifold etc for vacuum leaks and did not find any, I still have to check the PCV Valve hose that runs from the Intake to the Block.

Will definitely check the Plug Gap.

I was thinking of the Fuel pressure regulator. I plan on checking these items on Saturday.

Will update on the progress.

Thanks

Did this problem just start ?

Are you running the correct manual ECU for the engine ?

It's the correct ECU, stock engine which has been rebuilt. The issue started a while after the rebuild.

Today I am going to check the fuel pressure regulator as well as for any further vacuum leak.

Can it be a bad ECU?

Checked fuel pressure and regulator, all is well on that end.
Simulated a WOT by removing the vacuum line running to the pressure regulator and the fuel pump pressure went to 40 constant. Also during revs the psi went up as expected.
Remains at 31 when idle state.

Relay seems fine no signs of loose soldering on board.

Spark plug gaps are to spec.

No vacuum leaks.

Can a faulty PCV Valve cause this ? If the crankcase pressure builds can it have an impact such as sputtering

I am leaning towards a bad ECU.
In the past I can recall the Ground to the ECU was loose which had caused no start and also random shutdowns. But that was resolved, maybe it caused an issue after.

Often it is a simple problem. A bad or corroded ground can cause all types of havoc.

Are you using stock injectors ? Clogged injectors can cause a sputter and many stations here serve a dirty gas... full of particulate. Try an injector cleaner treatment or if you are a DIYer, pull the injectors and do a thorough cleaning.

How is the base ignition timing... is it set to 16deg ?

Thanks for your response, I will attempt the injector cleaning this weekend and update you.

I will have to get back to you on the ignition timing.

The fuel injectors were cleaned over the weekend and it's seems to be fine now.
Will continue to monitor it, if it's still there will update.
