question, what exactly is boost? I googled "boost", "what is boost in cars" and didn't come up with a good explanation.

Is a boost something different from having a "normal" turbo application or is it normal turbo?

I empty my cup and I'm willing to learn....

basically it is the compressed air the turbo charger generates.
remember one side of the turbocharger is essentially a compressor which sucks in air compresses it and then it goes usually to the intercooler then into the engine. It is measured commony in PSI (pound per square inch)

kimmm best to post your question in the honda forum as there may be some guys there who have turbo charged such an engine and will be better able to advise you.
As for basic parts here are some off the top of my head
turbo manifold
turbo charger
intercooler and the pipes
blow off valve
oil lines for the turbo charger
wide band gauge, boost gauge
some sort of engine management
perhaps change of exhaust pipe size.

thanks Maserati

Ok, so basically every turbo engine is "running boost" whether it be in stock form or increased, right?

If that statement is true why do ppl on this site advise other ppl that if they're going down the boost road to make sure and do research? Do they mean that interms of increasing the boost pressure?

Yea once u running a turbocharged engine you boosting as they would say

I think for the research part they mean if you are going to turbo charge a N/A engine
like research how much boost an engine can take without various parts failing
look at what others have done in the past and learn from their mistakes

this is when the turbo comes up to speed for it to build boost and operate efficiently.
a certain amount of exhaust gas is required for turbo to begin spooling up and compress air / build boost.

Correct, usually at a certian RPM, you've built enough exhaust gas pressure to cause the turbocharger to boost.

Explaination of 'Turbo lag / boost lag' is hard to get across with out experiencing it but you can think about turning on an electric fan. You don't get breeze (boost) immediately even tho the fan starts spinning when you hit the switch. Take a few seconds for the fan to buil enough momentum and air speed to have an impact. Once it gets there, it's good and powerful (being on boost or having boost come in, etc...)

Turbos can be matched to an engine size and possibly tailored to engine power/powerband if you have enough time. Turbo compressor maps are available and the formula to work out a turbo's efficiency range is readily available. Many stock turbo cars have turbos that are a good start for basic projects... pull a turbo from a similar displacement stock car an you can get easy performance as a start. Turbo systems can be very fickle... much like any other part of an engine, the wrong parts can result in subpar performance. The right turbo with the wrong downpipe can cause issues... leaky wastegates can lose power and lengthen spool time. A turbo that outflows the capacity of the intercooler can go so far as to spike the boost, or blow off couplings.

Turbo is just really fun, but doing it right takes time, research and sometimes trial and error.

i think it would have to be heavily moded to put a turbo on it but what about a cold air intake that would add a good amount of power.I have seen after market one for the Rappy and 400Ex but not the 300ex.

I have a question regarding the management system. Do they completely replace the stock ecu or do they work in conjunction with it? How do you go about selecting a management system also? I usually see systems that are for a particular car, but what do you do when you're gonna turbo a non-turbo car that there are no turbo alternatives to and no aftermarket ecu's developed specifically for it? Taking into consideration that the vehicle is VVT as well. If that matters.

Just doing some more reading and I guess a stand alone system would be the best for boosting an n/a car. Still want some info on what needs to be considered with the vvt.

If you are using a standalone its a complete brain and universal harness and if its a piggyback it will work together with your ECU.Most modern managements come with feature to control valve timing, ignition and boost retard system so it can be used on a DE-T engine.

Hey guys and experts, can you tell me which brand is better between Kinugawa and FP? I heard that FP turbos used to blow up in Subarus back in 2006/2007 but does that mean they are no good or has the quality of FP turbos improved since? I have an Evo 3 4g63 motor and I would like to replace the stock turbo with a dependable brand replacement "stock for stock" turbo. My choices are the FP Black Evo3 stock turbo and the Kinugawa Evo3 20g stock turbo. I have no reviews on Kinugawa at the moment even though I searched for some. Can someone offer some expertly advice?
