High perf. cars after the 1/4Mile

Postby cdx2k1 » June 3rd, 2005, 11:46 am

Hi all.2 Cars do 12 secs on the 1/4 but one has more HP & Torque than the other. It's logical that after the 1/4 the higher perf. car would pass the other one right?

yup. assuming all things being equal (driver skill) it means the lower powered one had better traction.

also, a heavier car would need more hp/tq to get it down the 1/4 in the same time as a lighter, less powerful car.

well said and ofcourse, gearing plays an important part too. It doesn not necessarily mean that the more powerful car will have a higher topend than the less powerful one. gearing makes a big difference.

when it starts to become more of a top speed race alot of things start coming into play...power-to-weight ratio ...coefficient of friction (aerodynamics)...gearing ..and engine characteristics ..to be able to continue to produce power at those kinda speeds

gearin is most important for top end speed after the 1/4.

jus dont blow yuh engine tryin to reach top speed.. heavier cars jus need more acceleration .. buh light cars that have good accel.. have remarkable top speeds.. and get there faster..once the shifts are done correctly

I agree...gearing is the big factor. The car's weight becomes less and less of a factor as speeds increase.

friction..weight ...shifting...shape of vehicle...??
wouldn't all these tings affect the outcome?

Yep...

You can go further... treadwear and compound of the tire, wheel weight and mass distribution, presence of body spoilers, suspension height, blah blah blah....

so wait i have a question. not that my car is anythign near racable.....

consider these factors in my car:
slightly lower than stock due to lower tires
free flow intake
spoiler
"high performance" toyo tires with a low treadware and soft rubber.....
factory spoiler

would that mean i'd hit significantly more top speed than the Book says i can?

It may not seem like much...but it really is significant when you need!

I am hoping to get a little more performance out of my car for daily (survival) driving :!:
