B14 Hard Start

Postby Chris00007 » June 28th, 2019, 10:12 pm

So I'm getting a bit of problems with my b14. It takes Rell long to start in the morning or if I leave it switched off for a few hours straight. If I switch it off and try to start it back within about 1 hour, it starts really quickly so I don't think this would be a problem with the starter.

Another thing is I'm also seeing terrible acceleration and if I'm going up a very steep hill, I have to mash the gas pedal all the way to the floor and the car still moving slow. The rpm taking Rell long to go up on acceleration too.

Need help with this problem ASAP. Thanks

check fuel pressure, coolant temp sensor.

So you can't get it scanned and find the problem? It could be anything or a combination .

Typically with that era of Nissan's its the cold start solenoid.

Could be fuel injectors, fuel filter or fuel pump.
Also change air filter or look for debris(leaves etc) in air filter.

It could be the solenoid but I'm getting very bad acceleration and very low power when going up hills even though I press the gas pedal all the way down. For these reasons, I'm thinking it could be the fuel pump or the injectors.

Wouldn't a bad/failing fuel pump give me both of these symptoms(hard start and low power)? I'm really not sure about cars but this is just my guess, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm leaning more towards changing the fuel pump because I heard that a failing fuel pump causes hard starting too. And well I get really bad acceleration and loss of power when going uphill so that could be the cause of this too.

I just don't want to change/fix things that doesn't need fixing and I'll end up wasting money yet again

If it slightly easier to cold start when you have a full tank of gas then it's the fuel pump for sure.

I didn't check it when the tank is completely full but if I prime the fuel pump (turning on the ignition for a few seconds) it starts easier.

This morning I didn't prime it at all and I heard a grinding noise when I attempted to start it. Then I primed it after and it started but it took long as usual.

Fuel pump or injector rail??

I'm not that experienced with cars but I had the same results when my fuel pump went bad. But it went completely bad after like a month though.

I got my mechanic to check it out and he revved a bit and told me it's not the pump, he said it may be the regulator so I'll need to replace the injector rail. I'll do that next week so I'll update as necessary but this may be the issue.

He said the rail isn't holding the fuel overnight and it runs back into the tank, so it'll need changing

Something is telling me that it could still be the pump, but I get really smooth idle and there isn't any whining noise from the pump when revving hard so I'm not sure anymore.

Try removing the vacuum line from the regulator before starting and see if that helps.

Okay I'll try this tomorrow and update. This weekend I'm also getting the spark plugs changed because my mechanic told me that may be causing the power issues when going uphill even though I really doubt that's the cause.

I'm really stuck right now between changing the injector rail (and pressure regulator) or changing the fuel pump. Are there any definite signs that shows when either of them are bad?

Car is idling really smoothly otherwise

Best way to test pump and regulator is a fuel pressure gauge. You will see base pressure idle and wot with the vacuum line removed. In my experience, when pumps fail you won't get good idle and in most cases you won't even be able to crank. If the regulator was bad then you would get ridiculous gas consumption on both sides of the scale. There are many simple things that can cause your issue as well as more in dept ones.

I've checked 3 mechanics and none of them has a fuel pressure gauge. Two of them said it's the fuel regulator and I'll have to change the whole injector rail. One said it's a weak fuel pump.

I'm really not sure who to trust here because it seems that these are just guesses but I'd like to know if there's any sure signs to know if either is bad. Ant DIY testing?

Symptoms are very hard starting only when the car sits overnight or parked up for a while. If I shut off and start back within an hour, it starts without any hesitation. Also I get really terrible acceleration problems when going uphill and I press all the way down on the pedal, and the rpm won't even go higher.

I can check your fuel injectors fuel rail and pump without taking out anything.

I tried this today and it actually started a bit better than it usually does on mornings. So the injector rail is the problem I guess. I'll get that changed this week and update as necessary

What's the name of the place? I checked a few mechanics in couva so I not sure if I may have checked you already. Also I changed the fuel injector rail yesterday and still getting the same problem with hard starting and the mechanic said my fuel pump good. So I'm completely lost at this point

Vacuum line is on top the regulator going to the intake manifold

Would it be possible to make this?

When navigating threads, ie from New Posts section, it jumps to the first unread post and not to the very last post in that thread?

Did you find the problem? If not, check your fuel pump. I finally got the problem fixed by changing the whole fuel pump assembly
