The Trax has the Opel A14NET LUJ/LUV engine which was 1364cc DOHC 16V ECOTEC DCVCP MPI unit putting out 138hp and 200Nm torque (220Nm on overboost) coupled with the GM hydramatic 6T40 transmission. In Australia and New Zealand this engine was tuned for 95RON. Here at home the 2016 Trax required premium but the 2017 model can now take super. Not sure if GM changed the tune of the engine specific to our market. It should be noted despite the international higher octane requirement, this older engine in the gen1 Cruze and Trax could have accepted 87AKI or regular petrol in the USA which converts to 91RON.

The 2017 gen2 Cruze has an Opel LE2 1399cc DOHC 16V ECOTEC DCVCP GDI unit putting out 153hp and 240Nm torque. In Australia the hp output is down 5 ponies to 148hp but the recommended fuel is now 91RON. In the USA, this same engine is tuned for 87AKI regular petrol which converts to the 91RON coupled to the 6T35 transmission which is supposedly an improvement over the 6T40.

On the launch day I will try to get my hands on the owner's manual of both the Trax turbo and Cruze turbo and see what the horse's mouth has to say on this as the final word for now.

If the Civic turbo can safely take our 91RON (as shown by fellow tuner drachaos a few pages back) then perhaps gone are the days when we hear turbo and automatically translate that into premium fuel only. There are tons of web articles supporting the use of premium grade fuels on small displacement turbocharged engines and a fair amount talking about even though the manufacturer says 87AKI or 91RON, you should try to put the premium octane fuel to improve engine performance in terms of reliability which translates to longevity, better fuel economy and maximum performance.

Thus far here is the local small displacement turbo engine fuel requirement summary:

VW Jetta 1.4TSI - 95RON
Nissan Juke 1.6T - 95RON
Ford Focus 1.0T 3-cylinder - 95RON
Chevrolet Cruze 1.4T - 91RON
Hyundai Veloster 1.6T - 91RON
Honda Civic 1.5T - 91RON

Don't forget the Tucson turbo, same engine as veloster, sales person said super...yea I keep asking them.

I asked a sales person and they said premium for the tuscon. The turbo is now 245K.

Does that apply to the Veloster and Sonata 1.6t since I think it's all the same engine as well?

The 1.6 sonata is available? I am not 100 percent sure if the sales person knows what she is talking about so that why I asked. I also fine it's tiring when dealing with one company and you cannot deal with one rep accorss all the lines that they sell, you have to deal with a Kia person and then a Mazda person very time consuming.

I'm not sure because I read somewhere which mentioned that the 1.6t will replace those 2.0 and 2.4 units. Think it applies to both Sonata and it's cousin Optima. Won't be surprised if those dead horse 2.0 units are still here though. Anyway, I think the logic behind unique reps representing a brand is not a dealership choice. I think based on the agreement to sell a brand is to fulfill several criteria including, a unique showroom floor (not shared with other brands) meaning no partitions but separate facilities, separate sales and service people like a head of sales and head of service etc. they even have a policy not to share manufacturers logos on one sign board etc. could be different rules amongst dealerships but this is what I've gathered so far.

I was told they doing this 4 the Tucson, gonna stop bringing the 2l n only bring the 1.6.i think it's based on the mvt, the 1.6 will b cheaper plus its more powerful than the 2l.

The jetta issues have been resolved with the newer engines, cthd I believe. They come with forged pistons as opposed to previous. The mecatronics issue has supposedly been fixed with the switch to mineral oil from synthetic. Those were the 2 major problems. There r other things that go wrong which I find shouldn't on a vehicle less than 5 yrs old. The ride is solid, good performance, lots of tuning potential, the "facelift" is not a new model imo. It is a facelift, although different markets call it a 2016/7 model.

SR wrote:My problem with all new car dealors is service especially within the warranty period. From all reports no one has good service...to the point its best one goes roro instead and seek service on the outside. Ford has 5 years 100k everyone else its aat 3 years.

From my experience, this could b a hit n miss. I get good and fast service when I carry my vehicle to 1 of Massy remote dealers, but when I go into the firm, it's always a long wait 4 the simplest of things. Always a drop n pick up scenario...

Personally I not going back roro, to many variations now that not supported by the local firms 4 parts especially body.

Have to many choices now. You have to really think long n hard about what vehicle u gonna buy next...

Would you consider buying a car that's been in storage over a year locally?

Audi in particular you can find stock over a year stored locally, especially the ugly colours. A colleague of mine got a new A4 the model before the current one with a 70k discount. It was a dark brown though, Ugly af but still an Audi

New Vehicle Prices In Trinidad & Tobago

Postby agent007 » July 8th, 2017, 1:09 pm

Colorado fully loaded is $280k. That includes the cash back offer but I would encourage any would be purchasers to negotiate further. That's my advice cause if I'm not mistaken, early customers got it for as low as $265k. What stands out for me with this Colorado is the power, the vehicle moves aggressively when on WOT. The lane departure warning, forward collision alert and smart phone integration features amongst many others are welcome treats to the class. I did not see any rear diff locker switch like in the Hilux though and I do not recall any rear AC vents. Other than that it's pretty neat!

Anyway, I took some amateur phone pics of the 2017 Cruze turbo and did a test drive. All I can say is, GM did well. Faster than a Civic turbo or Jetta turbo? I won't say faster but it sure can keep up with them. Coming from those anemic 1.6 engines and semi okay 1.8 of previously, the 1.4t is a huge welcome to the class and yes it's confirmed that it will sip regular or super gas as we call it here.

Like I mentioned before, the LTZ fully loaded is still not as well equipped as the units found in North America etc but I understand this is the best GM can offer for this market at this time.

As for the 1.6 turbo diesel version with the 9-speed auto, they could not confirm if GM will be sending any to us at this time.

Here's a couple pics for now until you get the real thing at ttautoguide.

The 1.4L Turbo on the new Cruze is lovely little engine. I took a test drive and it actually makes driving the car fun. Can actually feel the boost on this little powerplant. I know that a proper head to head comparison would be with the Civic or Jetta, but considering the price point, it puts this car in contention with the Elantra and Cerato locally. Makes the 1.6L competition seem rather pedestrian.

New Vehicle Prices In Trinidad & Tobago

Another car that is pretty much superior to all 1.6 cars locally is the Ford Focus 1.0 3 cylinder ecoboost. Not only does it shine in a straight line but it takes corners nicely too and it starts at ***drum role*** $180k !!!

Little big problem called premium with that one, plus I've watched reviews of that 1.0 n it's pretty weak, id rather a naturally aspirated 1.6, at least that way u don't have to wait for a turbo to spool up to get whatever little power the car has.
