Rover 200 Project.

Postby avimadvibez » December 15th, 2015, 10:01 pm

Ok guys, so I recently got my hands on a Rover 200, with a SR20DE and 5fwd gearbox conversion. Car was in way worse shape than I originally thought, but I kinda like the lil sporty look of it, so I'm gonna do what it takes to bring it back.

Rover 200
SR20DE
5fwd Gearbox (cable type)
B14 suspension front and back

Only work I did thus far was the chassis. Subframe was completely destroyed, and the previous owner did some very questionable work on the chassis, which i have (more or less) sorted out so far.

Anybody that cud give me some advice with regards to parts or upgrades feel free to let me know, I need all the help I can get lol.

Those cars were strong cars, only problem was the engine's cooling system which I was told from many owners. Saw a British review for it. I kinda like these cars myself. I do look forward to seeing this completed. You already have a good start. Don't give up bro!

I will ask around. There is a guy in Felicity named Chuna or something like that. He has a scrapyard. Lots of car parts. It's a start.

thais how mine looks at present. Still have a bunch of cosmetic stuff to do on it. tryna get it wallersspec for the SuperStreet Series in 2016...

Image

i really cyar remember yuh PM..but to be honest... understand what you want from the car before delving in. If its just a A-B you doing, then restore your body to top condition. If its a racer you building as a weekend blaster.... know who doing your conversion.

DollarSavers in the bamboo have most of the lights (front/rear..not fogs tho) for around $500 per light. It have a scrap yard in Central that you can get doors and door skins for roughly the same price...$500-700. But you hadda go in the vast scrap yard and look for yuh self.

I still have the original rotors and brake calipers for the front if you want them. Dont have the ABS rings tho..those broke. I bought new ones for my application. Also have the rear seat and rear deck. we cud talk a price if yours is broken/weathered.

But good luck man. if i had to do it all over, i'd kept the Rover VI engine... get the upgraded Headgasket kit for it...and massage the tutu out of it. It's a fun car

Thankfully the body in mostly original condition, apart from the ends of the front fenders and bonnet (look like it went under a van or something)

DollarSavers have the lights like yours with the black trim? those looking seriously wicked.
As for the inside, the seats, mats and dashboard are in great condition (wingroad front seats) but the door upholsteries are in a mess. Not sure what im gonna do about those as yet.

gonna upload some more pics today after work showing exactly whats going on with it

The final result looks wicked.

UPDATED PICS, took these today after putting on some black to cover the damaged/rusted areas in the front. You can also see the destroyed door upholsteries. The bodywork going to be the last thing done, after i'm completely satisfied with how its working.

Straightened out the kinks in the front end, so now its on the road and running straight and stable. Clutch slipping horribly tho, so thats the next thing to be done

Did some work over the weekend. Sorted out the clutch, changed oil, coolant, plugs, valve cover gasket, and cleaned out (kinda) tb and injectors, but the easyman way of just spraying some bars only helped slightly. May carry the car to get it professionally done as the car was run previously with no fuel filter, and this caused my walbro pump to fail on saturday.

Installed a new herko high pressure pump with filter and gas delivery seems to be alot better. need to sort out a few vacuum leaks.

Will upload some more pics and maybe a video this week.

I've been begging so many people to have the patience to help me with this car.

I'm not a mechanic nor will I pretend to be.
Damn thing isn't idling right now. It will start, keep running at 1500+ rpm, but refuses to idle.

Anyway... let me not hijack your thread.
Looking forward to the outcome of this.

isnt there some way to swap a honda drivetrain into this?
i worked on a few and almost 99 % of the suspension parts are the same as a eg8/ek3 but the engine looks the same but i never got into it.

i like these but i cant justify buying one unless its in a original state.

^^ the 400 series was also manufactured as a Honda Civic...There are many differences and many similarities
Engine & gearbox are Honda.

The Rover 400 & the Civic shared many items dashboard, switches, exhausts, suspension, ignition, central locking etc etc

not the 200. entirely different car.

Some fly by night mechanics told me that eg8 suspension parts supp to work on the 200, do you know if this is true? they seem different to me

Took the car for the first run today, went up to Salybia and back. Car worked excellent and it was a really fun drive.
Something seems to be sending an engine check to the brainbox, after some time on the road the car starts to stutter, restarting the car fixes it until it starts again. Need to get that sorted this week.
Bodywork should start this week as well

Good stuff..

Tear the door interior panels out and replace with these

Image

Spend time rip the engine and everything out and paint that engine bay over proper. Paint is all your project needs. Use the time to get the wiring issues sought out and neaten up your engine bay wiring (Zip ties, black loom, electrical tape, soldering gun and a scrapped harness can go a long way ) .
Get it done right, be patient and you will be surprised of the quality of the outcome.. This is a decent DIY project lots of room for you to be creative with tasteful unique mods.

That actually doesn't look half bad, although I'd prefer to retain the original look. Guess if that doesn't work out this would be the way to go

Yes the engine bay definately needs the majority of the work right now. All those straying wires and hoses need to be sorted out, and it could definately use a paintover.

What do you think is the better way to go, sort out electrical and then pull the engine and paint, or the other way around?

Once the engine not knocking or the gearbox or transmission in good order ( no alien noise or leaks anywhere, cooling etc on point and the performance is good to go ) proceed to rip out everything. Your electrical issue is an easy fix so it should not hold back on your going fwd to clean up under the hood. This is not pressing to do as you may have other aspects of the project that needs immediate attention. Again plan first have patience.. you will learn a lot along the way

2016 off to a start

Literally

Started the car today and we realized that it's not getting the right fuel pressure.
Nothing on the return back to the tank.

Dropped the tank and took it out.
Mechanic suggesting we use an external to match the PSI but for the life of me I can't find that info yet, so hopefully I get through with that soon.

The old gal will be back up and going soon 8-)
