The Hybrid Fuel Economy Thread

Postby DJ Q » April 27th, 2018, 8:08 am

I'm really interested to find out some real world numbers that people are getting with their hybrids in our local market.
Post you make, model and year when you're posting your info as well.

I drive a 2013 Toyota Prius and have owned it since Feb 2018.

Here are my fill ups thus far:

880.1km - $159.00 (21.98km/l)
931.6km - $155.13 (23.84km/l)
888.0km - $157.12 (22.44km/l)
848.0km - $156.00 (21.58km/l)
840.5km - $148.12 (22.53km/l)

Just for a comparison... The absolute best I've ever gotten in my '08 Fielder was:

647.3km - $160.00 (16.06km/l)

I'm hoping the info in this thread will help future buyers to compare some real world, LOCAL figures.

On my first tank of fuel on the 2015 hybrid.
Got it with 1/4 tank, cost 120 to top up.

Doing a full tank measure all now. Crossed 400kms, on half tank.

I don't like to go too low on fuel, so I'll have to average figures when it hits the last 1/4.

Got a 2014 RU4 Honda Vezel average about 18-19kms/l. From empty it costs $150 to fill, about 40L. With an injector clean it goes up to around 22kms/l

I have averaged about 35% distance on electric power alone (2625km / 7500 km total) and averaging about 55 mpg since I've had the car. 2014 Mazda Axela. $150 to fill (premium), 770-800 km range.

@DJ Q
i believe it has alot to do with the hours you commute. For e.g. if u commute at night u may not use a/c; this alone nets u above 30km/l.
Once the gasoline engine starts u try to keep it running until it can charge the hybrid battery to its maximum capacity. Then you apply pulse and glide.
If your route involves hilly terrain your km/l will be significantly less.
Another thing is be mindful of traffic lights and pay attention to whether they are red or green. Once red you should be entering regeneration mode as soon as possible, bearing in mind that once the charge meter is filled then the friction brakes take over.
But generally if you maintain around 28km/l you can easily hit 1000.

I've done enough testing to confirm that unless you are in very heavy standstill traffic, A/C makes almost no difference.
I've also been monitoring how the instant km/l figure varies depending on the charge state of the batteries.

Driving with a depleted battery @ 71km averages about 20 km/l
Driving with a full battery @ 71km averages 30-35 km/l

I've done that test on the same stretch of road (Southern main road, Caroni) both with no traffic, around the same time at night, with and without A/C, SEVERAL times.

Pulse and glide is my friend. Any slight decline brings a smile to my face as I watch those numbers go up.

My issue is usually that morning traffic usually has me burning to pull off then abruptly at a standstill with little room to regen.
It sucks but it's still WAY better than my old Fielder.

I asked this question in the Aqua Thread but I noticed you spoke about the pulse and glide technique. My foot is heavy. From what I understand, to benefit from fuel economy of these vehicles, naturally the aggressive driving will have to stop, but is it that you really have to focus on maintaining a certain threshold or subtle driving style or is it something that kicks in automatically when cruising say on a main road or something? The Aqua is cheaper but I'm leaning to the Fielder because of the space.

interesting...I'm getting 23L/km or 55mpg in mixed driving, ie traffic, clear highway, jackassery with right foot
...in a 1.6 turbo diesel
best I got was 25L/km or 60 mpg with mostly highway traffic

I've always been annoyed that we don't get small diesel cars here.
Diesel engines are amazing because of their high compression and high torque.
In the UK, a lot of 1.0-1.3 diesel cars average 70mpg(US) and higher with no stop/start.
Take the VW XL1.

That vehicle's drivetrain is purely orgasmic. averaging 100km/l

A diesel hybrid will be expensive, but will be the most fuel efficient thing ever!

mine pulled 100 whp and 187 tq...not bad for a cheap grocery getter...really is a pity those small diesels aren't readily available....keeping in mind, our crap fuel eventually kills common rail pumps and injectors :/

Does anyone drive their hybrid as they would a normal car? Would love to see the numbers for regular everyday ordinary driving as it seems everyone instantly changes their driving habits when they get a hybrid.

In my regular ole car, i get 420km to 40l gas. This gives 25mpg for the most part. This is with a heavy right foot.

Well that's what I was wondering, but I know the Fielders, Toyotas generally, to sip gas so a Hybrid version should be all the more economical, which is welcomed especially with another alleged hike in fuel prices on the cards.

I use my vezel.for Uber. And I Uber full time. I'm on the road all day everyday.

So that's more than a normal car from home to the office and back.

Distance covered is less important than driving style for my question. Do you drive like you would with a normal vehicle or have you become a "hybrid driver"?

Yes, I tried it.
The highlighted figure below was driving in a "normal" way
Also included a sprint from Kaydonna to UWI lights. Got to 176km/h then backed off.

When I fill up next, I'm going to abuse it.
I'll put the car in PWR mode every day.
A/C colder than normal (which i don't really like)
"Mash out" every so often (without endangering others of course)
I'll even turn off my dashboard so I can't even watch to see how I'm doing.

It varies honestly. Depends on the road. Sometimes you're on a nice smooth road and want to stay in ev mode so I adjust to suit. But I still achieve 650/700km

I run in sport mode only when gas is low. My foot is definitely a lot lighter than it used to be though. I don't drive as hard as I used to.

Since last full up I've been running with eco mode off to see if it makes a difference with the mileage.

Aqua - 540kms approx with 1 bar remaining on the digital fuel gauge.
Aggressive driving? - yes
AC on - yes
ECO mode on - mostly no
Cost to fill her up - $110. super

That would be great to know how it compares, but hey, not on my account :D

I'm on the fence on getting a hybrid. I have no intention to change my driving style and if it gets me the same MPG as I get now then there's no point. Any new vehicle will get me better mileage than with the old cars I have.

If there is benefit to having battery assistance with a normal driving style then I'm all for it.

Well I filled up for the first time this month on Sunday.

Started using PWR mode right through.
I find myself backing off a lot since the car is a lot more aggressive in that mode.
I'm purposefully not monitoring energy usage or avg mpg since I'm just keeping up or sometimes focusing on passing traffic.
Staying within the speed limits though.

This is weird for me. Haven't been an aggressive driver for many years now.

So, my experiment is over.

For one full tank, I had the car in PWR mode.
It's really a different car when you do that. So much torque.
I was driving harder than the "normal" driver.
No pulse and glide, no coasting, no any kind of typical hybrid driving.

Had 2 sprints from 0 - 145
Another from 0 - 177

Just pretty aggressive overall. A/C was on 90% of the time.

I didn't monitor the charge level of the battery, watch the km readout or anything.

It's weird because if you don't pay attention to the speedo, you really can't tell how fast you're going.

Time for the results.
With a fill up price of $155.09

...drum roll..

I managed

... more drum roll.....

*pause for effect*

*still paused*

831.2km
