Replacing two vehicles after flood losses...need some advice.

Postby Humes » November 19th, 2018, 11:40 am

Hi, all. It's been a while.

I initially joined this forum for advice on my first car purchase. I decided to go with a 2008 Suzuki Swift, and it's served me well for almost ten years. Unfortunately, both my Swift and my wife's SX4 took a dip during last month's flooding. After repairing them, we're looking to replace both.

I'd appreciate any advice you can give regarding those purchases. A few points:

- We're looking for vehicles with parts that are more affordable and easier to find than Suzuki's. We've been told that Nissan and Toyota are the best bet for that. Are those companies the way to go?

- We're both looking for something a little higher off the ground, especially after our experience. I've been looking at the X-Trail Classic, primarily, but I just want something tough and reliable. Tucson? RAV4?

- We've been told that RORO is the best option. Where are some of the best RORO places to check? (This one is important, because we need to buy one vehicle by month-end).

- Budget: $100k each.

Thanks in advance for your help.

At a 100k...forget going to stealership....good roro options out there...toyota & nissan good way to go but for something higher...you may need to raise budget..

Thanks for the responses. I'll adapt accordingly.

Is local used viable? I'm seeing some good options, and I have a good mechanic who can check out potential purchases.

I see the 2015 corolla coming roro at a cost of 140k...not the axio...car looks dammm good if you ask me..

As per your question...local used can be a good option...just be aware of that roll back mileage thing...carry your mech with you

I know you said you don't want to go back suzuki but for 100K each you can get some top condition last gen grand vitaras. Had mine now about 220,000 kms and it's still fine, no major issues and it can wade through a fair amount of water, I believe the official spec is 18 inches but I can tell you I have been through deeper with it (around waist height). I know the diff breathers are pretty low but that is an easy fix with an extension kit or DIY.

At 100k, you're in Xtrail classic and previous generation Tucson/Sportage territory, local used. For the hyundai/kia, most parts are readily availaible.

Whatever you buy make sure the same model/engine combo is sold in the US and then you can buy parts on amazon or ebay.
