UPDATE 5

CAR HAS ARRIVED IN MEXICO WITH 3 HOURS TO SPARE!!!

This from Mike Fennell at 6:00am this morning.
'The car finally arrived at 4:40am. We're now in a mad rush to prep it and reach the part expose for 7:30 which is 45 mins away. Phil is busy working on the ECU as we sticker the car. The driver has rested last night an will be the freshest member of the team.'

I checked the weather for Puebla Mexico and it was a very warm 10 degrees Celsius with 71% humidity and the forecast shows heavy rains. So its definitely going to be a huge test for the Caribbean Team.

As they say its 'On like Boil Corn' today. All the preparations, pace notes, and stress come down to 132km of mileage today against the best in Central America!

Bad news
They've lost the intercom and were having problems locating the service crew during the break.

After talking with John again before lunch, it seems that he is content to stay behind Trivino. Seems to be good strategy at this point, given that this is the shakedown with the car as well. Trivino is very quick and he is at home, so if Penti and Mike can stay in 2nd place for the event, get the points and then go out harder for the next leg which is also in Mexico.

The odds have been against them from the start with this event, so a solid podium finish will be very well deserved. But its Rallying so who knows what the day has in store for them and for the leader.

I also confirmed that they are 2nd overall in the Rally as well. There are 10 Group N cars, mostly Mitsubishi and a few Subarus.

Will keep updating as best i can.

[size=150]TIMES AT FIRST SERVICE BREAK
1. Trivino/Hernandez - 34:45
2. Powell/Fennell - 35:30
3. Izquierdo/Izquierdo - 37:12

CHECK THE CREW! and Trivino looking back trying to figure out who these Island boys are! haha

This just in from John:

'The fan stopped working on Stage 5 so we had to limp through Stage 6. Dropped another 32 seconds to Trivino.'

I don't know what more could go wrong for them on this event. Nevertheless they are pushing through. One more 28km stage to go and then hopefully we will get confirmation that the boys have taken 2nd spot.

Fingers crossed.

POWELL / FENNELL Finish 2nd Overall in Mexico

John and Mike managed 2nd place overall, finishing almost a minute back of Trivino. So to summarize:

- Neither driver nor co-driver speaks a word of Spanish
- Saw their car for the first time 3 hours before the first stage (due to a customs issue)
- Only allowed to recce each of the 4 stages twice
- Rally was at 2200m above sea level
- Trivino was on his home course
- Lost their intercom on the morning stages
- Lost their service crew before the first service break
- Fan stopped working on stage 5
- Limped through stage 6 before making service break before stage 7
- Won stage 7 (28km)

All that and they managed 2nd behind a world ranked WRC driver, who has been racing at the top level since 2002, making his debut in WRC Spain.

A huge success for the Caribbean Team on their first round of the NACAM Rally Championship.

Q: John this Rally was obviously very tough, but what do you think of your chances going forward to Round 2?

A: 'I think we have the speed to stay with Ricardo (Trivino). So when we go onto neutral ground its going to be interesting. I am really happy for the finish and now a lot of people are asking me about Rallying in Trinidad, and if everyone is as fast as us.
At least now Mexico Rallying now knows what we have in Trinidad and where Trinidad is in terms of quality of drivers.

Powell beat Trivino by 23 seconds on the final stage. Officials are inspecting his car now as they think he's too fast. Post rally scrutineering is normal for these events however.

REPORT FROM FENNELL

All,

We finished the Rally, and are now waiting to be convoyed to the Puebla City Center.
We got to the first stage and started to gear up only for John to realize he left the cable for his helmet in the service vehicle! Oh well hand signal time. Completed the first 3 stages and got to service. NO SERVICE CREW. They took a wrong turn and ended up a stage and couldn't get out. So I turned mechanic, borrowed a torque wrench and check general stuff. Begged for some fuel, and had to leave before the Service Crew arrived. So 3 more stages (now almost 100km) without intercom. On Stage 5 the car overheats, which was as a result of the fan stopped working. Stage 6 is run at very casual pace due to this problem so we lose 32 seconds to the leader. By this time we are 1:34 behind the leader - Trivino.
Now back to service before stage 7. Finally the car gets some TLC. Cooling problem sorted! Cable for intercom found! We have intercom. Now for the final 28km. We finally win a stage, beating Trivino by 23 secs. The driver was exhausted after this stage, - time for some gym work, haha. We did 18:52.7 and Trivino did 19:15.3 on stage 7.

So its:
1. Trivino/Hernandez - 88:55.6
2. Powell/Fennell - 90:06.7

John says that they are 'over scrutineering' both cars right now looking for anything out of the ordinary. FIA specification rules being enforced to the highest. To give you an idea, Trivino was disqualified in 2008 WRC Mexico in 9th place for a pair of gloves that weren't FIA approved.

Incredible performance in the face of so much adversity.
John was not given that name "Penti" just for kicks, the man has talent that we hope is just now starting to be exposed.

And next event watch out. (But go hide the car from now!)

And let us not wait for the MSYA to greet him on his return, let us get all the Motor Sport Lovers to do that, even bring Sheldon too!

And then arrange our own special function, but tell him he cannot speak for more than 30 minutes.

Man must be find some short-cut in the backwoods - or bauxite plant.

So what if the Customs did not get the instructions to hide the car from this caribbean team?
What if... he had the car to do the shakedown.
What if... the intercom was working?
What if... the fan did not mal-function.
What if.... the service crew didn get stuck in the wrong place?
Enough!

Great result anyway!

Disagree.

What if he did get the car on time and put a good old Caribbean cut-arse on the favourite Mexican son?

Man they would been scrutineering the car from now till next week!

Liking this idea, between Piarco / TTRC / Barry's spot, I will do my best to be there.

Excellent performance by Penti and Fennell. Kudos to them.
