Bass amp tripping

Postby Lancernh » May 27th, 2017, 4:49 pm

DD9500 connected to a 8k amp
Amp tripping when volume is turned up....
Speakers spiders were recently changed and are stiff
Why is the amp tripping???

Big 3 installed
320 amp alternator and 500ah + in batteries

Can the sub cause the amp to trip?
Sub is dual 4 ohm and amp is 1 ohm so there should be no issue with the amp being unstable

Check your charging voltage and do a big 3 upgrade.

This is probably the best first response to any op that I have ever seen on tt.

500Ah or 500CCA? A 500Ah 12v battery weighs about 150 pounds.

500+ ah --> 400lbs+ of batteries

Check your voltage and grounding points.

So I have multiple ground points installed and voltage is holding ...
I think it is something to do with the Subwoofer..... I switched out the Sub with another 9512 and the system didn't trip...

Why would the Sub cause the amp to trip?
The impedance is fine so I don't think the coil is damaged.

There only issues I can think of are one of the following-
1. Coil not centered
2. Spiders are to stiff
3. Coil height - this was told ?????

I am thinking only number 1 will trip the amp
Number 2 would cause the coil to just heat up not trip amp
Number 3 is unlikely since the speaker movement is small before it trip so I don't think the coil would come out of its gap

Check the impedance of the two subs with a multimeter as well

I was being optimistic and gave the weight for a LiIon pack (about US$ 1500). Some of the best Pb acid automotive batteries that I have seen are about 75 amp-hours and nearly sixty pounds, so I agree with you.

The impedance looks good!!!

2 subs - dual 4ohm
Connected them is parallel came down to just over 1 ohm as expected

Well I guess the final test would be to try your sub on another amp and see if it goes into protection.

If u said u changed the spider,I wud assume this only happen after that change which means it must be the sub, could be the coil robbing on the pole or a faulty repair somewhere on the sub wire leads

Check to see if any of the leads are touching when the cone is under excursion. To do this, move the cone back and forth with your hands and check to see if the measured resistance suddenly drops below the expected amount.

Sounds like the leads are arcing on the former... Recone time.

Yea I saw happen already with a locally wrapped coil where the varnish/epoxy was baked after it was wrapped. But u said u just used stiffer spiders with the original coil...Don't see the sense of doing that but even improper centering could lead to the current drama.

You are right took it out and had a close look .... it seems that the leads arc off ....

It is most likely d repair work not done properly
