Does A Single Din Head Unit Has Any Advantage?

Postby ItsMahJam » May 28th, 2017, 12:49 am

Hello there guys and gals! New here and I have a question. I still see a lot of single din head units on sale. Do they pose any kind of advantage over the 2 dins? Is being smaller can be called an advantage at all?

The double DIN format was developed to package cassette and CD players in the same head unit. Some OEMs, like GM and Ford, used the 2DIN to package HVAC and infotainment into a single unit to deter buyers from ignoring the pricey optional OEM audio systems that are still quite profitable.

If you have the space for 2DIN, you normally get a bigger and better controls layout - maybe even touchscreen. The amplifier and codec boards are almost always the same as the 1DIN packages, though. Since the vast majority of head units manufactured are 1DIN, you will normally see 1DIN units at lower prices.

So the answer is: 1DIN is smaller, is less of a theft magnet, costs less, and may be the only option for many cars. With in-vehicle network streaming and remote controls, the popularity of 2DIN control units is decreasing, also.

With double din you have advantage for reverse camera system, touch screen control and DVD playback. If you just want to play music without those features buy single din

I see. I thought 2dins are always better since they have touchscreen and stuff.

Well, a touchscreen is a big deal. Like said earlier you can easily hook up a parking monitor with it. Very useful when you're parking in tight spaces. Have a look at this 2 din, you might like it http://www.autocio.com/best-double-din-car-stereo-reviews

once u get accustomed to seeing everything big even on d double din non-dvd decks its hard to go back to a regular single din

if u have a touchscreen dvd deck well even way more super easy to see\use & most of them have plenty features & tuning

pioneer shud make a version of their 80prs in a double din full size touchscreen ...

Yes, I have my compartment below to keep sheit. Plus a big double din would be a distraction. For someone in SQ, there's no need for a huge display. I have an 80 PRS, it does not need a double din display at all.

I do wish that Pioneer would put out a newer model of that deck with a better display though. The display is awful, compared to what used to be provided by their previous decks with similar features, e.g. the 9800BT.

Yeah the look and feel is awful. Very plasticky, and the display is horrendous. They spent the money on the internals I guess. An update would be nice.

The advantage: Space to put your phone and wallet under the deck.

Vehicles don't usually have a lot of space, value every inch.
