Sub options (small sealed enclosures)

Postby VexXx Dogg » September 14th, 2017, 10:32 am

dudes, looking at some options for subs that can work with small sealed enclosures.
Does not need to be a shallow sub, so up to 5-6" mounting depth is fine.

10"
SVC 4ohm or DVC2x2ohm
300-400RMS
Must fit in a sealed enclosure between .35 to .45 cuft.
Should have the option of a grille to help with a stealth installation/sub protection.
budget: ~2.5k for 3 subs so avg 700-800TTD each

Any thoughts? Am I being unrealistic?

I second the Image Dynamics for small enclosures. Dont think they make a grill specific for it but no biggie.

i know u all probably already know this but i just want to say b4 buying any sub make sure to run it on a enclosure program , because plenty companies claim their subs will work in small enclosures but when u check it on a program u see peaky output with poor low end response ...

the minimum sealed enclosure for the ID 10 is .4 net so you will be cutting it close

the only other sub that can topple the ID 10 is the re-sr pro
25hz fs
2.5 or 3 inch coil
18mm xmax
300wrms

a pair those in 1 cube net with 1- 1.5lbs of polyfil should sound awesome!

I used 4 RE RFX8" in about 1.55Cuft sealed with dacron and that worked out well not punchy at all. Think the FS was around 22hz. Dont think they are in production anymore but I'm pretty sure the ID would do the trick.

What about DAD? I think nigel had some in his hilux.
There is a JBL as well but the published ID response curve won me over.

I like the ID, but I've honestly never heard them play.
Might need a demo before I decide.

This looks REALLY good too. could go as low as 0.35CUFT sealed.
I dig the sleeper look too.

I think x factor had an ID I demoed. Not sure if kaizen has the demo car still that christian worked on. Rovin and pioneer had idmax. Not sure of anyone else offhand with them.
These days not sure who holding down alpine.

yeah, the ID 12 in .9 cubes sealed with 1lb of polyfill sound awesome, ran that when i tried my hand at sq

Then ran the RE-SR pro and i thought that had a little edge over the ID, it took a little more power, played pretty accurate, probably a bit more SPL over the bandwidth played

currently alpine type r but in ported and that is pretty decent, gets low with good spl (ported to 28hz) but not as snappy as the others....had better processing on the others tho
hoping to try it sealed within the next week

I like the ID10 so far, but still looking at other options that I could factor into a package deal

Budget?

If I was going to use three 10s for an SQ build (highly unlikely as two 12s would likely provide much more linear output for less money), I'd probably try one of the Dayton RS series, like the one at this link: https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-au ... m--295-460

Explore some of those 8” subs as well Vexx....some are really impressive and u get a nice quality sub for the price...nice output in a smaller enclosure than the 10s and more than likely in keeping within ur budget u can afford a high model 8” that a company offers for around the same price as one of their lower end 10” sub

Thanks, will do.
I'm a terrible overthinker, so I'm still looking at options :)
When this eventually gets done I'll share what I eventually went with and what were the motivating factors.

Shuks im now seeing this thread and i already started one.
I will just put the details here:

I need help on choosing a pair of subs but i have some parameters.

Summar y:
A pair of D4 10s 500rms min to work in an enclosure max internal 2.2 cube, 37.5hz and <7" mounting depth.

Details
1. It must be a pair.

2. It would be nice to be D4

3. Max mounting depth is a fraction less than 7 inches. I could put a riser to compensate a bit.

4. Max diameter is 10 inches....not even 11 inches.

5. Enclosure total internal size is approx 2.2 cubic. Port displacement will account for .09 cube. Sub displacement is still unknown but both port and sub displacement would have to be deducted from the 2.2 cube. The enclosure could be increased slightly to possibly 2.5 cube but as a last resort. I dont mind a very slight sub underperformance in the existing 2.2 cube space

6. Tuned for approx 37.5hz using a pair of 3" pvc ports.

7. Has no cabin build. Subs are going in a pickup.

I have heard the Sundown Sa-8s (approx 600rms@ $1500) and they are very impressive so i can imagine how the SA 10s would sound. $ is not a problem but they seem a tad bit overpriced to the other options.

i have heard the 10" db drive wdx (approx >600rms @ $900) which is equally impressive.

The massive gtx 10s ($650 @ >700rms) seems like a good choice but i just heard them in a store and did not sound impressive maybe because of lack of power but i dunno. I would like to hear them in full bloom.

The following is NOT the point of discussion whether true or false: I am not at all interested in skar (had the sd line and the rms rating was not true and very disappointing), image dynamics ( had the id line and rms is not much but true and just way overpriced per rms rating), or pioneer (had them works great but needs cabin build to really sound good in my application).
Of course many of the arguments are the build of my enclosure, the power and who did what so instead id just like a demo of the product to replace arguements lol but still not the focus
