Weird Noise from Audio Control 6XS

Postby theblitz » December 29th, 2017, 10:53 pm

I have a question regarding a 6XS I have which I've diagnosed to be introducing noise into my system. The noise isn't a hiss or pop, but rather an increasing frequency noise (the only thing I can imagine it to be is like a capacitor being charged like a gradual build up) then after a couple minutes the increase in frequency of the noise is not easily discernable. I bypassed the crossover and the noise ceased. This is a first for me after working on systems for a few years and I'm wondering if anyone may have experienced this issue as well.

I tried moving the grounding jumper and here are the results with audio system on and no track playing (paused):

1) Isolated - Car off - gradually increasing frequency noise
2) Isolated - Car on - same as #1, but no additional alternator or engine noise
3) Ground - Car off - no noise, perfect operation
4) Ground - Car on - severe engine noise, noise actually begins when ignition switch is turned on before starting engine too.
5) 200 Ohm - Car off - same as #1 but not as loud
6) 200 Ohm - Car on - alternator whine.

I also tried grounding the 6XS somewhere else but the results were the same. Since this worked well at #3 I want to assume the 6XS is fine but not sure that to try next.

Chips are all seated properly and I will spray the entire board with contact cleaner tomorrow just in case.

Any thoughts?

start with amps...use an alternative source. ..phone with rca and a couple Y jacks....loop 12v to remote and tape off all other removed rcas...if system works well with car on etc...
put your source bypassing the deck to rule out deck and possible damaged rca...

To bypass the 6XS I used double sided female connectors to join the cables. When bypassed there is no noise so the source and RCA are fine. I'll try a direct REM later today, but that same signal goes to all the amps and cause no noise there. Thanks

Is the processor ground the same as either the head unit or the amp?

If so, switch to the other and see if there is a difference.

Once I had an issue like that and grounded the rca itself and it worked

Try hooking it up outside of the car on a separate system to rule it out for sure

The 6XS ground is to a point in the trunk. I even moved the ground to different valid points and run a direct +12V to a trunk battery with no change. I got to a point t that I even disconnected the two trunk batteries altogether. I will have to make up a system outside the car shortly to test the 6XS as mentioned above since I strongly believe now the issue is with the Audio Control. I just bypassed it again and you could hear a needle drop in the car- no noise at all.

So running the 6XS external on a cell phone source and a spare amp I get no noise.

Returning to the car and grounding the RCA gets rid of the frequency-increasing whine, but as I start the car there is terrible engine noise.

Running the phone output into the 6XS in the car (disconnecting all leads from the HU) no noise.

This weekend I will try another HU and also try running fresh RCAs outside of the car to the back.

If anything, u can install those noise filters on the power source to the hu and the processor.
Btw, what is the model number of ur hu?

My friends are lame- no one has a 6XS lol

Puzzling as it seems, I pulled the HU today:
1) moved the ground and same issue
2) ran a spare RCA cable outside to the 6XS and all is well.

Turns out the front to back RCAs were introducing noise somehow. I was careful not to put power and signal closeby, but I figure (in trying to be neat) I may have routed cables too close a factory harness somewhere. Fresh RCAs will go in tomorrow via another route and then I can proceed to tidy the install. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and input.

By the way, this flow chart from Crutchfield is a good method to follow to help isolate system noise:

https://images.crutchfieldonline.com/learningcenter/articles/417/NoiseSuppress.pdf

Not sure if it was shared before but, even though I tried everything before getting the flow chart, I'll still keep as reference.

FYI: the reason I say puzzling is because the 6XS was the only device that highlighted the noise. All other amps worked well when connected on these same cables.

Touch the rca negative from the hu, to the ground.

sMASH...the issue was found, but along the way i did ground the RCA and the noise disappeared with the car switched off. However once the switch was turned on the noise came back and when started the noise was worse (from a consistent annoying noise it turned to engine noise when grounded).

fuzz, the system is in my bro's corolla...he recently bought a 320A alternator and 2 batteries from you so we are now working through the install when i have time off. The system is DD amps for bass and low mid, Audio Control for front doors and high mid (and of course the xover)
