XS Power SuperBank (capacitor)

Postby 3stagevtec » June 3rd, 2019, 12:58 am

Installed an XS power 630F Superbank (capacitor) in my system. Sub amp is an Orion XTR 2500.1 Xtreme, if you ever saw the tests on these, you know they make crazy power. Electrical system is stock alternator (80A) and basic small lead acid (Pricesmart) battery.

I will let the video show the difference it has made for my daily play system. The meter has a slow resfresh rate but you can see how the voltage was dipping everytime the low note played. The capacitor was more than able to supply the power required for the low notes and maintain a steady voltage level.. should make for a more dynamic sounding system..

Voltage drop to 13.61V (No capacitor)

Same song, same volume level, with Capacitor added.

The song I played had a heavy dynamic note in the low end. If I play the more modern rap songs with a constant heavy bass, the voltage will very slowly drop, but for me, it doesn't go below 13.5V. Again, this is my personal daily play system and I can go full tilt for a song or two back to back with no worries for low voltage damage to the amplifier.

This has saved me from having to purchase a higher amperage alternator.. and the weight of the cap was just around 9lbs. The engine also tumbles a lot faster now as an added benefit.. lol

I also have another video with the car off and me continuing to play the music at medium volume level.. it took around a minute for the voltage to fall back to battery resting level at ~12.6V. Also took 1hr and 10mins to do the initial charge on the damn thing! These capacitors are no joke..

Nice review!

alot of people dont understand the benefits to be gained from using these "super-capacitors" in your car audio system

Got it from Team2lo2flo, msg them for pricing. It does have enough capacity to easily start an engine, these are not anything like the capacitors they used to make a few years ago..

Well, that sure as hell saved you some weight.

Whose dmm is that though?

lemme be the devil's advocate.
For a non-competition vehicle (forgive my assumption) how much "audio quality" are you really losing when volatge dips to 13.6? Can the difference be measured?

healthy charging sytems usually start at 13.8

IMHO it seems to be an expensive placebo, no offense intended to anyone in this thread

Not sure about audio quality being lost from voltage dips but more of a strain on the electrical system with the high current demand.

I miss my frontier now, 14.4V right through.

Is a Milwaukee miltimeter. Had it some good years now.

Outside of the dynamic range part, I have at minimum a good 2500Wrms on bass and 800Wrms up front. At full tilt (before cap with bass heavy music) the voltage will drop to low 12.xV range and that reading was taken from an in car volt meter, so the voltage at the amplifiers will be a bit less.

Now with the cap installed, I can play multiple songs at full tilt and the lowest voltage I saw was 13.6V.. and that would charge back up quickly in between songs or in between bass notes. All this with the stock 80A alt and small lead-acid batt. So there are benefits to having this, vs an alternator upgrade or additional batt on stock alt upgrade etc.

As for the video and dynamic range part, I just figure the slow refresh rate on the meter isn't showing the full story on the voltage drop at the amp. Should have used my o-scope instead.. Also, I was not playing the system very loud during that video. It wouldn't be hard to do a mathematical calculation to find out the power difference from vid 1 to vid 2 though and that could theoretically show the difference in power that amp makes from 13.6 to 14.05.

The 1st test starts at 3:40 and you can see better how the voltage dips even with the large batteries. His volt meter shows it way better. The after test starts at 10:10.

At the end of this vid (14:05) shows a nice side by side comparison between batteries only and batteries with large capacitors..

Insane for what it is.

Picks up very little space and can make such a big difference. Feels almost like an empty box.

I had recently came across a video of me demoing my system and the volt meter was dropping to 12.xV everytime the bass kicked in.. sadly, I had deleted the vid from my youtube channel. That aside, I can now play the same music at the same or even higher volume and the voltage holds steady at where ever it is currently resting at. I;m sure the power difference will be quite noticeable if clamped both before and after

That's going to take you over 1 hour to charge with the included charge light.. I allowed mines to charge to 11.8V, then touched it direct to batt to charge the rest of the way and the 2AWG wire got warm! Make sure you have some free time well before installing! lol

Actually, I didn't buy it.

Wanted to see it in real. Fuzz was kind enough to take one out and let me have a look when I asked. Didn't take it out the plastic though. A customer might kick a fuss if they get one with plastic open.

But my oh my
