Well sunday gone i had it all up and as i was about to turn the key i notice coolant (the $185 a bottle toyota coolant :( ) coming out of the water pump. So i had to take down every thing to get to the pump and i only put it back up last night so hopefully i could do some work on it this evening and tomorrow i'll organise the heat wrap and a new battery and i should be good to go.
(fingers crossed)
I learned one thing from this whole experience - 20v mechs don't charge nearly enough

Update:
Car has been running for about 2 weeks now, no long runs since i only fixed the alignment monday plus I got in an accident week before, but i can say that the engine is a little louder than before, it seems to be running a bit more aggressively now though. i'm not sure if that is to do with the new filter and heat wrap but for sure the heat wrap have the engine bay relatively cool, even after short hard runs.
Only thing to do now is to fabricate a shield for the air filter so that when the rad fan comes on it does not blow hot air on it.
All in all i'm please with the results.

I have attempted to review this complete thread for conclusive infor. and just couldn't seem to get same, hence the following question.
-Has anyone dealt with what appears to be the lifters rattle emanating from the top of the 20v silver top engine and feels confident to report on approach executed.
I did de-sludging exercise thus far,but a little uncomfortable with going to 20w-50 viscosity.

You have to first identify the source of that noise - be it lifters, VVT gear etc.

There's a 2nr on here who quieted his considerably by simply replacing worn valve shims and buckets.

I spoke to another 2nr on the phone some mths back who quieted his by cleaning his VVT cam gear (intake cam gear) by soaking it in pitch oil for a few days and then "rinsing" it with flushing oil.

When I rebuilt mine, it was super quiet, but that was because several noise-makers were repaired - gunked up shims/buckets, severe piston slap (you could actually shake the pistons around by hand...I dunno how that engine was even running like that) and I cleaned up the VVT gear one time (clear pitch oil went in and three days later, black pitch oil came out). Then the noise came back for a day just before the old oil pump died (took some bearings with it too) but that's being rectified as we speak.

I've heard about using a thicker oil, but IMO it just masks the problem. In all three cases above, we were using 10W-30 oil in different brands (I was using Valvoline before the rebuild and Kendall after and the one with the lifters was using Castrol Syntec IIRC).

Thanks,for the reply.
The desludging has worked somewhat and I may go after the VVT gear next.
If these things don't give me the desired result,I intend to go after lifters.
The key feature of my experience is that the chatter is really evident primarily in the morning whilst engine is cold and lubes have obviously settled.
Once the engine warms and we are up to normal operating conditions things settle down nicely.

where are the best sources to find a rwd t50 gearbox or even the t40 gearbox for a rwd 4age application.

My friend bought a levin recently with a silvertop. The engine was changed in it and currently the tachometer and speedometer doesn't fiction properly (moves but doesn't give the correct readings) and the O/D light blinks when the switch is disengaged. The O/D seems to not be able to disengage since the RPM remains low when the over drive is disengaged. He's gonna get it checked out ASAP but I came across this thread and I'm wondering if anyone had any similar issues and know what the cause might be ? Could it be a loose wire causing the overdrive not to wrk?

The O/D light flashing means there's a fault or an error code with either the transmission or the circuit controlling it.

Subject: 20V 4A-GE: Warning Light, Speed Sensor & ECT Diagnosis

Hook wrote:we learn new things every day folks...I recently had a problem with my "O/D Off" light flashing on my dash..here's the remedy

A self-diagnosis function is built into the electrical control system. Warning is indicated by the overdrive OFF indicator light.

Note: Warning and diagnostic codes can be read only when the overdrive switch is ON. If OFF, the overdrive OFF light is lit continuously and will not blink.

a. If a malfunction occurs within the speed sensors (No.1 or 2) or solenoids (No.1, 2 or 4), the overdrive OFF light will blink to warn the driver. However, there will be no warning of a malfunction with lock-up solenoid.
b. The diagnostic code can be read by the number of blinks of the overdrive OFF indicator light when terminals TE1 and E1 are connected.
c. The throttle position sensor or brake signal are not indicated, but inspection can be made by checking the voltage at terminal TT of the check connector.
d. The signals to each gear can be checked by measuring the voltage at terminal TT of the check connector while driving.

The diagnostic code (trouble code) is retained in memory by the CPU (of TCCS ECU) and due to back-up voltage, is not canceled out when the engine is turned off. Consequently, after repair, it is necessary to turn the ignition switch off and remove the fuse EFI (15A) or disconnect the TCCS ECU connector to cancel out the diagnostic (trouble) code.

Note: Low battery voltage will cause faulty operation of the diagnosis system. Therefore. always check the battery first. Use a voltmeter and ohmmeter that have an impedance of at least 10K Ohm/Volt.

Check "O/D Off" Indicator Light:

1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. The "O/D Off" light will come on when the O/D switch is placed at OFF.
3. When the O/D switch is set to ON, the "O/D Off" light should go out. If the "O/D Off" light flashes when the O/D switch is set to ON, the electronic control system is faulty.

Read Diagnostic Code:

1. Turn ignition switch and o/d switch to ON. Do not start the engine.
Engine NOTE: Warning and diagnostic codes can be read only when the overdrive switch is ON. If OFF, the overdrive OFF light will light continuously and will not blink.

2. Connect TE1, and E1, terminals of check connector.
Read the diagnostic code as indicated by the number of times the O/D OFF light flashes.

Image

Diagnostic Code Indication:

• If the system is operating normally, the light will flash two times per second.

• In the event of a malfunction, the light will flash 1 time per second. The number of blinks will equal the first number and, after 1.5 seconds pause, the second number of the two digit diagnostic code. If there are two or more codes, there will be a 2.5 seconds pause between each.

NOTE: In the event of several trouble codes occurring simultaneously, indication will begin from the smaller value and continue to the larger.

Image

From what you describe, a disconnected or improperly connected speed sensor could well be the culprit. The ECU is likely in limp mode.

See the link below for how to check it and confirm that before your buddy goes to a mechanic who'll make him spend thousands more than he has to, with trial and error replacing parts unnecessarily.

The link has how to read trouble codes for the engine via the Check Engine Light and the transmission via the O/D Off light.
