NZE121R Steering problem after rack replacement

Postby legend » July 12th, 2016, 7:34 pm

Good day Tuners

I have a toyota corolla NZE121R-AEPDK; this is the 2002 1.5 1nfe Singpore version. I recently did full suspension work on the vehicle, new tyres, calipers, rotors, shocks, link, inner and outer velocity joint and the steering rack. I have since noticed after installing the rack, the steering is very stiff and not feeling as normal. There is also a clunking/popping noise at certain spots whilst turning, not specific spots but it happens sporadically. There is also a notice of a steering vibration and a rattling noise at speeds at around 90 -100kmph (during testing). The steering overall feels off. One last point it is the steering is not returning smoothly or fully to straight after a turn; it does return somewhat but not as smooth or responsive as before. I tried to lock the the steering today and it locked only at a 90 degree angle (see photo).

Any suggestions?

Best Regards and thank you for viewing

If power steering is hydraulic system then did they bleed the air out from the rack also power steering pumps can fail after a rack change
Electronic rack works with a motor . Motors go bad

If I am not mistaken the electronic racks and box systems have to be recalibrated so the control module knows where is center and how much degrees u are turning so the electric motor will know how much to adjust the rack by.

I am not a pro on this but just the other day I was having this convo with someone on the topic. Scan tool is supposed to be involved for the recalibration process
