'98 Mitsubishi Lancer Carb Problems

Postby Shane_G » August 31st, 2010, 1:24 pm

Please help. We have a '98 Mitsubishi Lancer with the 1.5 automatic. The mechanic said the choke is broken inside the carb. Where can I get a new replacement? It does not have to be an original as I understand the Aisan carbs for these generally do not have seals and gaskets that last with the fuel we have here. But if you know of a good aftermarket replacement (Weber etc.) please advise of the model # and any adaptions that would be required to make it work. The car is getting horrible gas milage and I would like to improve it greatly. Thanks!

Shane

If anyone else has this problem... I have found the solution. Go to this webpage.... http://www.ehautolink.com.my/webshaper/ ... ctItem=463
Contact Celine in sales. For $211 U.S. I got a brand new replacement carb delivered to my door in one week and installed and tuned it in one day. I just drove 100 miles and still have a half tank of fuel!!!!

Thks Shane_G. I tried them but they were out of stock, but found Miparts online had the same carb in stock for US$90. The Proton Wira & Saga (Malaysian cars popular in Asia) apparently use the 4G15 engine and share the same carburetor. The part number I got from Miparts was EMN-0012389. The Chinese manufacture replacement carbs, part nos. MD-192036 & MD-192037. The photos look identical to what's in my 1998 Lancer GLX auto 4G15 (bought from JQ Motors in St Lucia).

I have ordered one from Miparts, and will let you know if/when it arrives, and whether it's the real deal. Shipping was US$75. Total $165. With customs duties on top it will come in nearer $300, but if it saves gas, it will pay for itself in the long run. Fingers crossed....

Update: Carburetor arrived from Miparts yesterday. Looks the business. My mechanic fitting it tomorrow. I'll let you know the result.
The cost was slightly changed: I paid US$140 for the carb and US$75 for Fedex shipping (total: US$215); import duties in St Lucia: US$90, so the US$300 estimate was pretty good!
Mipart service comes recommended (contact: Pan). http://www.miparts.com/advanced_search_result.html?keyword=EMN-0012389&x=4&y=8

Latest: the mechanic took two hours to swap the old for the new. Now in and running like new! I will let you know about fuel consumption. Certainly runs smoother, and revs up when the gas pedal is pressed, without a delay as before. There were a couple of differences between the old and the new, namely change of position of the vacuum pipes for rubber hoses, but nothing the mechanic couldn't resolve.

Sorry for delay in posting an update. My carb replacement is still working, and I have only one negative issue to report. Every few weeks the engine will start to stutter and lose power. It will then stall at idle.
The cure is to remove the air filter housing, start engine & rev to high revs while covering air intake on top of carb with your hand. After a couple of minutes revving and choking intake in this manner, the blockage in the fuel supply/carb system is cleared, and all returns to normal. I have found no way to cure this operational hiccup. I have tried carb cleaner and fuel treatments. My Mechanic has removed carb and given it a general clean up. Still the problem re-occurs periodically.
If anyone has a long term cure, please share it! But if not, I'm still happy with this carb, and it's general operation and starting when cold is fine.
As for gas mileage; I 'm afraid these auto Lancers are not great. I didn't notice an improvement myself. Luckily the price of gas has gone down, so I can fill my tank for less than 100 ec$ again!

My mechanic is Jack by Manee's bakery in Corinth. If you're still having trouble with hook up or smoke, pay him a visit and he should be able to help. Tell him Watters sent you!
