WTK: New tyres for EVO 9 - Suggestions?

Postby don-dada » July 16th, 2014, 2:23 pm

Yes everyone,

Just need some advice, need tyres like yesterday, from what I have been checking the ultimate tyre is Yokohama S-Drive, I got these stock with my evo but since upgraded stock rim to rays 18' x9.5 - 22 offset, I am running 255/40/18 Falkens, tyres haven't lasted me a year. Mostly DD going on, so I am getting Sumitomo from Wheel Wizard in that size as well as Falkens again. But wanted some suggestions (prices and places to get them)

Thanks

Bridgestone RE-11
Sumitomo ZIII (cheap and not too bad) (Ignorant ignis, Pete and Xauss ran these in solodex)
Hankook RS-3 I have been personally running these, on my second set used for street and dex. A little noisy, but very grippy. One set lasted about 18,000KMS
Hankook V12 Evo, extremely quiet comfortable tyre with a nice amount of grip for road.

Wheel Wizard will bring any of the above for you. Might get the V12 and Sumitomo in TT.

This should help. Image and X-treme UK (a.k.a. RalliArt) recommendations for Evos 1-10...

Link--> Evo Engine, Gearbox, T-case, LSD & AYC Oil Specfications.

Their Image

This is important if using an upgraded "Forced Performance" turbo (especially during the initial "break-in" period).
IMHO I would follow FP's recommendations for ANY upgraded 4G63...

Any preferred brand of oil for this initial break in?
preferred brand... Depends on the engine used and modifications done. IMHO check with product manufacturer first.
For instance, a normally aspirated 4-banger revving to 7,000 rpm (w/ "street" cam & making < 180-200 lb/ft torque @ flywheel) will be less "picky" than a well modified engine. eg. Evo 4G63 with 450+ lb/ft WTQ & going to 8,000+ rpm.

It also depends on which "add-ons" are used... eg. if you use an FP Red/Black turbo on that same Evo 4G63 engine then you MUST use an oil that's high in zinc & phosphorus high pressure additives... Yup, IMHO even for a 3-mile "break-in."

Link--> Forced Performance Recommendations for Motor Oil.

FP's Image

So it looks like ALL locally available oils are unsuitable for use with FP Reds & Blacks; except the following grades...
Amsoil = only "Dominator Racing Oil" grades.
Mobil1 = only "Racing 4T" and "V-Twin" and "0W-xx Racing" grades.
Royal Purple = only 3 types of "XPR" grades.
Valvoline = only "VR1 Racing Oil" and "Valvoline® NSL Synthetic."
"A word to the wise..." So when all the local "experts" tell you otherwise  , ask yourself if they know as much as those giving the recommendations above... and remember... IT'S YOUR ENGINE! YOU have to pay for repairs!

Yes Trinituner family,

wanted some info, my original evo radiator has a small leak, I went by Ishmael in El Socorro, he does not have the top tank to replace mines with, so instead of the aluminum after market radiators, is there any other place that might repair the original radiator? That anyone could suggest.

Also if i have to go with the aftermarket, where has and prices? and what are the pros and cons of replacing the original with an aftermarket one.

Thanks again all

Definitely check teknet...best supplier for all your evo needs.

As for aftermarket radiator I run a Mishimoto for the last year and a half. Excellent fit and no issues to date. At $270 US price isn't bad either

If you want to go baller my favorite is the CBRD slim but it ain't cheap at $600 US plus you need to switch to a slim fan. It also moves the upper rad hose further away from the manifold
