Can i put SUPER in a WRX!???

Postby selectar69 » October 2nd, 2012, 10:06 am

Fellow tuners! I am new to this forum and a new WRX owner. With this rise in premium gas i was wondering if super would work in my vehicle. Its a 2005 WRX local peanut eye. Has any body ever tried this? Also i heard u can tune your car for a 92 octane or the ECU is supposed to retard the timing or something. Can anyone shed some light on this because in the states those guys run their STis on 91 octane in some instances.

Trinidad Uses the RON Rating System, the US doesn't.

91 Octane in the US would be around 95 RON in Trinidad (i.e our premium grade fuel).

If you intend to run super then you will need to get your car "de-tuned". Reduced boost/timing etc, all in all, you will experience a drop in performance.

Granted, you can choose not to "detune" and allow the car to automatically pull timing/drop the IAM, however, I won't recommend this. Before the IAM drops the car will be knocking, in addition, the ECU will continuiously try to add back timing at which time it will knock again further damaging your engine (this over time will surely fork it up).

the user manual on a wrx says 91 ron mimimum trinidad super is 92 ron minimum
and lance im confused as to what u mean with respect to ron and octane?
ron is jus short for (research octane level)
i have been using super for quite a while on my wrx with no issues
however i wouldnt advice you to pushing the car to its limits when using super(drive reasonable but dont max the hell out of it if you know what i mean)

there is a difference between ron and aki.

have you ever pulled a learning view to see what your ecu is dealing with?

yes am sure....
the manual recommended it and also the tank cover had 98 RON written on the inside

if the manual jus said 91 octane or pump octane number most likely it is the anti knock index aki which is premium in the usa and equivalent to 95 ron in trinidad which is premium....

also a friend of mine went to n&m and enquired bout a new wrx sti and they told him that they do not have in stock,...

if he wants one they will order it but won't upkeep the warranty becuz trinidad doesn't have the correct fuel for it......requires higher octane.....
