Perrin Oil cooler review

Postby Aaron 2NR » July 26th, 2015, 7:33 am

Got the PERRIN Performance oil cooler kit installed and did some driving with the car this evening. No hard boosting or accelerations but there is already a significant improvement in temperatures. Usually while cruising 80-100km, the oil temp would be 215-220F. With the oil cooler I'm seeing temps between 195-205F. Will give an update when i do more high RPM pulls....

oh sorry i forgot about this...

so with the tune I'm seeing temps on a hot day around 208-210 cruising.....quickly cool down to 190deg once left idling.

during competition temps got to like 218-220F. Normally i would see 230F up...

so there is definitely a lot of improvements in the cooling system...

This is a nice kit. Sadly, nothing is really "Perrin" apart from the brackets.

If someone is looking for the simplest install then this is a good option (depending on the price).

If anyone is interested, I have done the research and put together a similar (almost identical) kit myself.

1. The cooler core is a Setrab 235mm Matrix 13 Row Core - Around £90 in the UK (I won mine for a bit less at auction). Mocal has a slightly cheaper option in the same size (great quality as well).

2. The Adapter is a Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate (available in 80/85 deg) - Around £50

3. I bought Mocal braided lines and fittings for £50

4. Spacer, hose heat shield, bracket materials etc. - approx £30

Total was about £220 or TTD$2200. You might pay a little less if you source from the US. The brackets are a cinch to make.

I did the same thing with my Fuel Rails and went with the Boomba Racing Option and assembled all the accessories myself. I probably saved about $1200-1500 over the perrin rails. The Boomba Junction Block is far superior as well.

that total is before taxes and shipping right??

Mocal braided lines are sold for $85TT +vat per foot. avg $850TT + vat
Fittings - 2 straight - $150+vat each, 1 45 deg - $185+ vat, 1 90 deg - $125 + vat =

Total for lines and fittings alone locally is avg $1679

Mocal thermostatic adapter - $100US + shipping and Taxes = avg 800-900 landed

those things alone are putting you over the $2200 avg that you posted...

Agreed the kit is not manufactured by Perrin by its a solution that is put together and assembled by them and i honestly think the cost is well worth it. The choice is up to the consumer at the end of the day and for a more or less plug and play kit I would pay for it...but thats just me....everyone is different...

Even if one pays those standard local inflated retail prices then it might still be cheaper. This decision can only be made after comparing it to the local price of the perrin kit (which I suspect might be around TTD$5,000?)

However, with adequate research and online shopping the prices will be far less that what you've quoted, even with shipping and duty.

My intention is just to provide an equivalent option for the guys that don't have that kind of coin for a Perrin kit but want the same level of quality.

extremely hot day yesterday at racing, intake temps were at 150F before leaving the light....cooled down to 105F or so while racing...

highest i saw on my oil temp gauge was 230F (after two hard runs) and quickly cooled down to 195-200F...

the link below is a nice detailed one for the installation in a FT86. the setrab core works really well
