exit line leaving the pump to the engine. break the line off the engine then look inside u will see the strainer...use a needle nose pliers and pull on it. wash with soap and water....rinse clean to make sure no soap remain and replace. when finish...prime the pump until knob is firm and start the vehicle.

would that be the line that leaves the fuel filter and enters the engine with a 17 bolt, i removed that once but i dont think there was anything in there, does anyone have a picture of what this looks like?

It suppose to have a thread somewhere around with this process with pics. I not really going to open up mine to take pics, but yes its the line with the 17bolt. It suppose to have a small plastic frame with a mesh like housing for you to pull out from on the engine. If you dont see this you can look into the hose line itself and see if you see the mesh strainer in there(Mine on a Ranger is in the line)

I took out the strainer to clean but when i put back everything diesel leaking and the van cutting off. Could anyone tell me if i placed back everything in the right order....first the strainer, then the spring, then a washer, then a spacer, then a washer, then the fuel line with the ring, then a washer and the bolt!!!

Yes this happens, check the washers, make sure seated properly, may have to be replaced.
