1986 Mazda B1600 Engine Swap

Postby 86MazdaB1600 » June 18th, 2016, 7:40 pm

My truck has the original gas engine but the block has some issues. I have done 2 engine jobs in 2 years and I'm not going to spend any more money on this engine. The engine runs great funny enough, but burns oil at an alarming rate. I've been advised to install an SR or an RB but I'd like to stick with a Mazda engine preferably gas and fuel injected. I'm hoping to get one that lines up bolt for bolt. Any advice and suggestions?

If the van is in an original, local condition don't crossbreed it. These pickups hold a better resale value when left original. What engine do you have na or f6? Theres the f8 both electronic carbureted and fuel injected, the fe efi, the bp twin cam from the miata, the f2 efi and the g6(b2600). All these suppose to fit a b2200 without major conversion but the easiest to find would be the bp, f8 and the g6.

Yes it is original with an f6 engine. I have been calling around to foreign used parts dealers, a few in the bamboo but mainly south but Nissan seems to be the focus when it comes to engines. Do you have any places that you can suggest?

Prabhu's have 2 f8 electronic ignition carbureted, hyperfas have a bp and bamboo marketing have 1 f8 fuel injected from a bongo panel van. You could try george from clarke rd next to the nagar, he suppose to get engines soon 678-5511. The f8 is the easiest to get parts for. But what work have you done on your engine tho? The f6 is virtually bullet proof if maintained properly by a good mechanic. Mine did 250k km and just needed some head work. Was surprised actually how great condition the block was in. Problem is when it's cold tho.

Oh when looking for engines, you need to go to parts places and not call. They tend to not bother really unless your there. I know you said gas but the rf diesel is actually a good engine and does not require much fab work just 2 cortina mounts and the f6 oil sump.

Thanks for the info! The first one the mechanic changed rings, valves & some other things I can't recall and the second it was mainly the rings. The second time it was a different mechanic though.

Did you rebore the block? Was the correct size rings used? Talked with a mechanic by me today and he was saying that almost all mazda f engines he worked on did not respond well to standard sized rings and it is best to rebore and go over sized like 10 thou or so. By the way the rf can also work with your gearbox just need the rf bellhousing.

No the block was not rebored & I'm not sure about the rings, I'm only now starting to understand mechanics so the question I should have asked then I didn't. When I complained about the oil problem I'm having now, the last mechanic I did the last repairs by said that same thing about the rings not responding well. So I was advised to rebore the block go over size as you also said but giving this a third chance don't seem to make sense. I'm thinking it would be more worthwhile purchasing another engine.

Dude you have to do what pleases your mind. If you think the p.up would be better if you changed the engine then change it. After all its you who have use it. The f8 is a good engine and parts are very available for it plus it can work with your gearbox with no conversion what so ever. Its not big power like the sr but it costs a fraction of the cost. With a fuel injected f8 engine you would need to rewire and install a new fuel pump. With the carbureted you just have to install the engine. The carburetor is electronic and so is the distributor so no more contact points and condensers. The other mazda engines are good also but you need to consider parts avaiability and the resale of the vehicle.

Bro it seems that mechanic did some serious guess work your vehicle and those engines are the basic of the basics to work on. Judging from what you described he probably didn't even consider honing the block. Would be interesting to know his capabilities with more complex modern engines. Finally legislation is now being brought forward to deal with issues like this regarding small businesses.

Hmmm... I felt the same way about the guess work! I think there are too many of them just experimenting on people's vehicles. Thanks for all the assistance though. I'm hoping to get this project going in a few weeks.

Hope you get thru. You going through some real headache there. Glad i could help. Had my fair share of bad and some cases dishonest mechanics and it was extremely frustrating so youtube became my best friend and now i do most of my repairs myself at home.
