How does the engine feel when this is happening?
Mileage and history of the vehicle?
All fluids in good condition? Engine oil, coolant, tranmission fluid?

the engine feels like its "grasping for breath".
Recently tuned up in October last year. Milage is about 130,000. All fluids in good.

Try some known good coil packs and update us.
Sounds like a misfire, which is either injector or coil pack.
Possibly cam or crank sensor, but these usually act up more when the engine is hot.
Post pics on the condition of the spark plugs.
