The gamble- Adding insult to Injury

Postby StefanH2 » September 27th, 2014, 2:55 pm

So as in the previous "Gamble" post, yall know that the valve body in the tranny of my B6 bad but it seems drama continues.

So I returned from work one evening this week, and glanced in the car and realized something looked off.. Took a closer look and saw the internal rear view mirror hanging. This is the auto-dimming rear view variety eh. Upon closer inspection, I realize that the entire thing came off at the base. I was like, "really bwoi? Alyuh serious?". The car is parked uncovered so I figure the sun beating down on it has something to do with it. I jess laugh oui.. Ain't make sense fussin much over it.. So I called Double Zee to see if I can get this repaired. At first the dude said sure it can be repaired.. Reached there, he telling me that the entire windscreen has to be replaced. Cost of replacement? $5000.00. This makes no sense to me.. If the base can be applied in the first place, can't it be reattached to the windshield? Why must I replace an entire windshield, with absolutely no scratches or digs whatsoever? So tuners, I'm thinking this can be a DIY project. Yall got any info on this? Thus far, internet research seems split down the middle. Some saying that you gotta replace the windshield, while others saying the base can be reattached.

The base can be re-applied but like most DIY it will require alot of time specifically for this...

I have came across a forum which details how to remove it, but can't recall...maybe bunnyears can find it...

Basically after removing the cap base of the mirror, you have to heat the adhesive a bit on the windscreen to and use a plastic scraper to remove the majority of the thick adhesive....

After you then use a very light sheet of sand paper and water to lightly rub off the remainder in a circular motion....

it may leave VERY small scratches which can then be polished with some sort of windscreen or glass polish....sorry can't offer more than this
