Happy New Year Euro Tuners..

Model :E39

Type: Saloon

YOM: 2001 (Facelift)

Colour: Metallic Anthracite

Engine: M54 (Straight 6)

Transmission: 5 speed automatic

Mileage: 92,548 km



The BMW Maintenance Schedule are as follows:-

On Sunday, I run a scan on the car and it generated the following codes:
CA- Fuel trim bank 1 control limit
CB- Fuel trim bank 2 control limit
F0- Misfire detected, cylinder 3
EF- Misfire detected, cylinder 2
EE- Misfire detected, cylinder 1

After researching on BMW forums and the internet, the first option was to pull the spark plugs.

The spark plugs pulled were the NGK BKR6EQUP (3119)

Now this explains the misfiring taking place.

Some oil was found in Cylinder Number Six spark plug well, with the spark plug being soaked.

This points to a breach in the valve cover gasket.



Further research also indicated that is is advisable to change the Vanos seals, which over time tends to deteriorate.


This is an extract from Beisan Systems (www.beisansystems.com)

Vanos Seals Failure Symptoms
Overall loss of torque and power, particularly in the lower RPM range, < 3k. Bogging then surging at 3k RPM. Uneven power distribution and RPM transition. Engine hesitations in the lower RPM range, < 3k. Louder idle and intermittent idle RPM hiccups. Difficult takeoffs. Loss of power and bogging when AC on. Increased fuel consumption. Vanos fault codes.
Double vanos cars with the M52TU engine (98/99-00) experience cold weather cold start idle jolts and possible stall.

Next task: Change valve cover gasket, vanos seals and spark plugs.

you can use the iridium plugs 5BKR6EIX 6418

as you have down time, service the injectors and change the o2 sensors.

I see they mentioned that the NGK BKR6EQUP (3199) is highly recommended.

Changing vanos seals should make the world of a difference. from my research i discovered that even before the vehicle reaches 30,000km the oem vanos seals starts to 'degrade'.

i bought an aftermarket vanos kit upgrade for mines but havent installed as yet. i'm just collecting parts for now. and later in the year i would 'restore'.

i think it should be about time to change your fuel filter too.

kit is about 40usd. its just a few seals, bolts and washers.

here's a tip, a misfire on cylinder 1 and 3 doesnt necessarily indicate both coils are bad.
with the m54, bad spark on cylinder 1 will also cause cylinder 3 to throw a misfire code. You'll need to clear the codes and restart, see which cylinder misfires first, replace that coil and you'll be okay.

this has been my experience working on e39's.

looking at those pics though, i have no idea why water would be in there, aside from if you washed/bathed/drowned the engine.

It is beating me as to how water got in there.

The car was scanned in 2014 and the codes were cleared. I had it parked under the house, ever so often starting it.

Approximately one month ago, I bought a new battery for it and I decided its time to restore her as I have some spare time.
