Replacing BMW F10 5 series battery

Postby feeldavibe » December 28th, 2015, 9:30 am

Hey guys, dealership wants over $5000 to replace the battery in a F10 5 series. This is madness! Apparently the computer needs to be 'told' that a new battery has been installed.

Anyone know if this can be done for less money somewhere else? Looking for recommendations. Ansa is ridiculous with their prices.

Well thats what kinda happens when you buy cars like these. The maintenance tends to be rediculous. Gl with finding an alternative

Yeah sorry, I don't buy into the typical trini thinking where you buy an expensive car so you must be charged exorbitant prices in return. The car has a regular AGM battery that's just been branded 'bmw'. I'm going to find it somewhere else.

Get the battery outside .... However you still need to have it 'registered' @ the dealership ...

Recently replaced an E90 original battery with an AC Delco after much consideration. No registration was required and I have no issues. And I got the battery for $1600. Battery for the 5 series should cost a bit more.

Also if you don't have an Ansa card, get one .... It should qualify for a discount.

Why does a battery need to be registered at the dealer?

After reading this I'm still not convinced as to the need to register the battery. If it was so important surely a note would also be placed in the car's manual?

Do you think it's another strategy by the manufacturer to keep us going back to the dealership?

Not sure of that either. If they really wanted you to do that I would honestly have thought that there would be a note in the manual. Sounds more like an oversight on BMW's part to leave something like that. Interesting topic though as it seems people are split 50:50 on it.

The f10 does need a software registry everytime the battery is changed,

Hey guys, spoke to Lange and they said they've changed 5 series batteries before and price is $1900. I am going to take the car to them so they can see it and make sure they have done it before, as they could be talking about earlier models. Someone also told me to check mileage mack, I'll call them today. I have no problem changing the battery at lange for $1900 and paying the $1600 at the dealership to register it, it's a lot better than the dealerships over $4000 price for the battery alone.

I also think that BMW should have just included an option via iDrive to 'reset' the battery so we don't all have to pay the dealer a sheit load to do that.

Seriously why is it $1600 in labour though? Registering seems to be as simple as hooking up a laptop to your car and and clicking thru some menus. 30 min job max at that.

I totally agree. I think I will ask what their hourly rate is and how long exactly it takes to register it to justify the price.

If you don't register the battery with the car, it's going to give you an error message. I've got a 328i F30, but I've read about replacing the battery on your own, you can download the software they use in the dealership called Rheingold. It'll allow you to go through the battery registration process with your car.

I haven't done it myself, I have done a little coding with Esys but I think I'll try Rheingold this evening.

Hey 2nrs alyuh get through with the BMW battery? Where you bought it. I checked out Ryse Imports from on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/Ryse1mportsTT/?ref=hl

Apparently the BMW cpu stores battery values and a simple changeout will not remove the old values. So if you just change the battery, the car wont know that the battery was changed. You have to delete the old values and let the car generate new values for the new battery. It have a mech who can do this without going into the firm.

Correction : I was recently told at the dealership that only a BMW battery can be registered.
