thats funny i seem to remember the official response of the UNC was "we support of any measure that will lead to the demobilization of people at this time" ( my job behind a steering wheel allows me to be tuned in to the parliament radio station most of the time)

What mooneylal was calling for : a reasonable approach to softening the economic fallout from just shutting doors.

if it good for the malls (car park certainly was not empty today) and prestige holdings, it good for bars.

but some paid propagandists and so called journalists spin it and alyou lapp it up

i was in three stores today - a drug store . a hardware. a grocery.

there was more congregating in those establishments today than I ever see in any bar on a wednesday during working hours.

If KPB was in power for this she would be on a truck giving out toilet paper to crowds ignoring social distancing stance. This is the nonsense she likes. Pappy show

really ?

does nobody remember UNC MPs specifically Gopeesingh and Wade Mark -trying every which way since JANUARY to get the ball rolling on emergency preparations - legislation and economic/infrastructural planning - for the corona virus ?

does nobody remember them being SILENCED in the parliament by the pnm ?

does nobody remember the pnm propagandists on radio and social media bawling how dey only want to destroy wee culture and dey racial and they want to cause a panic to unda-mine wee conchee ?

The truth is if KPB was in power we would have been much better prepared for this. the UNC wanted to start putting sensible measures in place since forking JANUARY.

but "dee oppazishan want carnival and wee economy tuh fail because dey unpatriotic"

PNM propaganda will be alyou downfall. stop falling for the lies.

Pay close attention. dont just read headlines and look at facebook comments and memes

Soldier this is not about PNM and UNC at this stage.

It doesnt matter who is in power, and who coulda woulda shoulda bla bla bla....

Btw, both PNM and UNC are total wastes in my book....No one could have predicted the outcome of this and you cannot expect any Govt to put the nation at a panic from since January.

Frankly, the PNM didnt do too much of a bad job handling this so far...

But go ahead and study PNM and UNC meh boy.....the main problem is the lack of support from the general population.....how u plan on fixing that?

always this same tagline "UNC and PNM both bad but support PNM"
PNM full of incompetent idiots.

pnm doing sheit, and will allow it to spread. their measures are not stringent enough, to acheive what they seek to acheive.

is like, they want to rebuild a gearbox and buy leggo gears, then blaming the mechanic for not doing it right.

Allyuh sure that confidentiality thing is a priority now? Is not like aids or a next lifestyle disease where only the victim affected. Is something that if you were in basic contact with the victim or was somewhere the victim was or interact with someone the victim interact with....that you and your family could be affected.

The knowledge of the victims names or whereabouts could mean instantly locking down yourself...or going to visit granny and gramps normal and killing them.....

unc has no decision making capacity, ALL decisions are being made by PNM. and the fact that kamla was willing to call an SoE in the past to pause the country until they coudl get a grip and then move on....i will use that as an indicator that they woudl have called and SoE now, when we really need it.

pnm doing rubbish, and any ting they do good, they doing it at least a month late.

Cars are fewer but crowds are still there. Savannah also had its fair share exercising in groups also.

"Patient confidentiality" seems to be an ignoble phrase, until God forbid someone's family member contracts this virus.... then all tables turn.
This is not some sexually transmitted disease that has implications on your embarrassing sex life or whatever, people don't go about their business looking to catch this virus. The people who have contracted it are unfortunate cases, whatever the circumstances, and now they have families and friends worried- for themselves and for their loved one. Neighbors are shunning them, service providers are avoiding them because of ignorant discriminatory behavior....
This could happen to anybody, so please try and respect their right to privacy.

And for those who keep going on about who hiding what information, this is a direct slap in the face to the frontline workers who are persistent in performing the duties that no one can pay them for, risking their own lives daily to keep the spread down and to provide accurate info based on tests to a concerned public, who at every opportunity sits back in the comfort of their home giving facbook their time.
I am in no way political, but have you asked yourself what is to be gained by concealing information from the public? CARPHA, as the testing entity, (not politically affiliated as they are obligated to serve 26 English speaking Caribbean countries) has their credibility at stake if the results from their tests differ from what the MOH announces in their briefings. The health care workers who daily risk life and limb transporting samples, caring for the infected at the goverment facilities, members of the protective services, etc. are performing their duties for God and country at this time, no salary can compensate for what they are faced with daily......
For get the damn politics, there's always time for that, we need to start looking at it as us vs this virus.

Cross Crossing food strip closed from Friday
Yvonne Webb

VENDING on the Cross Crossing food strip, San Fernando, will be suspended and the number of wreckers operating in the city will be reduced owing to the reduction in the number of vehicles on the road.

These were among measures announced by mayor Junia Regrello at the San Fernando City Corporation (SFCC) statutory meeting on Wednesday as the city adopt measures to combat the spread of covid19.

Regrello said effective midnight Friday, vendors who operated an open-air food strip at Cross Crossing would no longer be allowed to ply their trade.

He said the suspension would be in effect until further notice.

Regrello also announced that an additional 20 municipal police officers had been reassigned to San Fernando to assist with managing the Chaguanas, Port of Spain and Curepe taxis who are restricted from plying their trade on upper High Street, at certain hours. Some taxi drivers complained earlier this week that their vehicles were being wrecked from the taxi stands.

Regrello said officers are also assisting with the management of the Central, Marabella and Fish Markets for the purpose of crowd management.

"There will be no vending of clothing and haberdashery at markets during this period. Social distancing is to be practised at all markets via cones."

The number of wreckers operating in the city has also been reduced from three to two to facilitate a margin of leniency in the wrecking of vehicles, Regrello pleading with citizens not to abuse this opportunity.

The council complimented the Prime Minister and his team for the bold initiatives taken in light of the pandemic. Regrello said Dr Rowley's decisions were prudent and demonstrated a profound sense of care for citizens during this difficult time.

He said the council would continue to support the guidelines stipulated by the ministry of health and made a special appeal to all citizens to adhere to these guidelines.

Don't get angry with Kamla' over COVID death announcement
Anna Ramdass

Do not get angry with Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar for disclosing that Trinidad and Tobago recorded its first COVID-19 death.

According to Opposition MP Dr Lackram Bodoe the nation must understand that the former Prime Minister may have "saved a nation" with her statement as he pointed out her "main" message was her call for a 14 day shutdown to effectively address the killer virus.

Persad-Bissessar issued a release at 6.14 p.m. on Thursday calling for a national shutdown as she cited the COVID-19 death.

“A Covid-19 positive patient at the Couva Hospital has died. We extend our deepest condolences, and we must be cognisant of the serious implications and consequences which may follow,” she stated.

The death was confirmed by Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh at 8.01 p.m. on Thursday.

Persad-Bissessar has been criticised by persons on social media for breaking the news about the death and causing panic to the families of hospitalised COVID patients.

Others have commended Persad-Bissessar for disclosing the truth and accused the Government of hiding the issue.

In a Facebook post on Thursday night Bodoe stated that Persad-Bissessar's statement was to ensure that Government takes action to protect the people.

He stated:

Before you get angry with Kamla understand how her statements may have just saved a nation.

1) This Government promised to be honest, forthwith and transparent about our COVID-19 situation however it took the Leader of the Opposition to tell us about our first COVID-19 death as opposed to the Minister of Health. Ask yourselves, had she not told us would they have told us & when?

2) Announcing deaths in any crisis are not done to create panic but must be done in a timely manner which allows the country to monitor the crisis it faces and adjust accordingly . We have seen this done on the international level where each day we get a daily count coming out from Italy, London and other nations which has led to those countries taking more serious action to protect it's own.

3) Announcing deaths in a timely manner in these cases cannot violate the families because from day one we literally did not know who these families are. However it makes the man on the street who is disregarding the situation know that this is serious, this is not mild and that he should take pre-caution.

4) Kamla's actions have shown citizens that they have a Guardian who will hold this Government accountable in the methods they undertake to deal with this crisis. In essence she is spurring them on to ensure you and your loved ones are actually given the protection needed .

5) Do not forget the main part of Kamla's message was for a NATIONAL SHUT DOWN. Last week Thursday we had 9 cases, this Thursday we are over 60 with one death. We need a shut down. Citizens need to protect themselves. Our health system cannot cope with the levels that countries who acted too late are dealing with now.

Man vacationing in T&T is first COVID death
Anna-Lisa Paul & Mark Bassant

A US citizen reportedly vacationing in Trinidad and Tobago is this country’s first COVID-19 death. The man, 77, reportedly passed away at the Couva Hospital around midday Wednesday.

The death was confirmed via a release by Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh Wednesday night, after he initially refused to do so to Guardian Media on two occasions after he was approached for the information.

Contacted via cell phone around 6.30 pm, Deyalsingh refused to comment but asked, “Would you like to learn that your parent has died in the media?”

Pressed further, Deyalsingh claimed a need to ensure the family’s privacy was respected before disconnecting the call.

Guardian Median also approached Deyalsingh after Wednesday’s session of Parliament after 7 pm and he also refused to comment before getting into his vehicle and departing.

Although Deyalsingh delayed confirming the death up to that time, some news sources had long done so on their official global statistics on cases and deaths. Up to 8 pm Wednesday, the total number of COVID-19 cases globally stood at 468,155 with the global death toll at 21,180. Apart from the death, T&T also recorded its 60 confirmed case Wednesday.

Guardian Media understands the man was among the first set of people in the country who were diagnosed with COVID-19. He was described as a “complicated case” and had other condition which made him susceptible to getting the virus.

Records show the man, who visits the country intermittently, presented with symptoms at the San Fernando General Hospital on March 13. The man was staying with his sister and niece at their San Fernando home.

Deyalsingh’s official release confirming the death was eventually issued at 8.10 pm.

Contacted on Wednesday, one of the man’s relatives declined to speak about the death at this time and appealed for the family’s privacy to be respected.

Meanwhile, residents of the community where the man was staying have reportedly expressed concern and alarm following the death. Having just emerged from a 14-day quarantine period, one man, who did not want to be named, expressed unease as he said his family had been in close contact with the man and his family...
