Luis in '95 reached St Maarten as a Cat 4 and strengthened to a Cat 5 as it got to the very warm waters off the coast.

This was the first of 4 Hurricanes i experienced...the sound of the wind and the pressure building in your ears every time it gusted will be something I will never forget. ...and the sound of thousands of hammers pounding
nails in roofs....Cars, boats and houses flew like kites...by the hundreds.

We spent 18 hours huddled in an all concrete room in the center of the house listening to the am station from Antigua.

CBS News - Hurricane Irma becomes most powerful storm ever recorded in Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Irma strengthened to a Category 5 storm with winds up to 185 mph as it approaches the Leeward Islands of the northeast Caribbean, the U.S. National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday, making it the most powerful storm ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean.

If it stays on the forecast track and reaches the Florida Straits, the water there is warm enough that the already "intense" storm could become much worse with wind speeds potentially reaching 225 mph, warned Kerry Emanuel, an MIT meteorology professor.

Thanks for the answer. You jogged my memory. I remember how it seemed like the Leewards just kept getting hit in '95. Got to see some damage in Antigua when the Liat pilot circled before landing. Can't remember after which hurricane but the damage was widespread. Made me appreciate Trinidad even more, that we rarely ever get affected by hurricanes in Trinidad.

WOW that is an incredible picture. This was a really good clip BBC did on how hurricanes are formed. But it appears that we are now one step further, if this is anything to go by the global warming every year getting hotter and hotter means the hurricanes are going to get worse and worse. The power starts when it hits the warm waters of the Atlantic but starts out as something as simple as a child playing in the sand in Africa

Reports say Irma is well over speeds of what is normally considered Category 5.

Could we be looking at Category 6 soon? this was the hottest year on record and most powerful hurricane on record, coincidence? even if we tried to adapt to this with better constructed houses etc it will keep getting stronger and stronger every year as global warming eventually goes wild. And we still can't solve the issue of flooding.

Problem is the speed at which the ocean is evaporating now due to global warming. The Hurricane is like a vacuum sucking that moisture and carrying it.

At 1:47 a.m. this morning, the eye of Irma made landfall on the island of Barbuda (from Antigua and Barbuda fame - for those who do not know Caribbean geography or islands).

Top winds were 145 mph.

Barbuda got a direct hit. Still awaiting reports of how they fared.

USA, Russia have been experimenting with that for years.

Check out 'cloud seeding'.

FYI, the design wind speed for buildings in Trinidad is 117mph and in Tobago is 130mph.

"Nomal" hurricanes will leave T&T in a big pile of mess. If a hurricane like Irma hits T&T, we will be in a super big mess.

Pope Francis’s flight from Rome to Colombia has changed route to avoid Irma, Reuters reports.

The Alitalia aircraft had been expected to fly over Puerto Rico, but will instead shift south and cross the islands of Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad, a Vatican official said.
