Android Eee Pad to debut in June, could ship as early as July

We have more details on that impending Eee Pad for y'inz. Interested? Of course you are! Speaking at a conference in Taiwan, Asustek Computer chairman Jerry Shen recently announced that the device will get its official introduction at Computex 2010, the first week of June. With any luck, the thing will hit retail channels the third quarter of this year -- possibly as early as July, a DigiTimes' source reports. Shen said that the device is meant to be all the things that the iPad is not: expect Google Android, USB, an integrated webcam, and Flash, for starters. The aforementioned source went on to state that, after wireless provider subsidies are taken into effect, the thing should cost around $15,000-16,000 TD (or about $480-510).

Official Twitter for Android App Now Available

Well, hello! We knew it was coming, but it looks like an official Twitter app is now available in the Android Marketplace. It's free and looks fantastic:

There's a homescreen widget, tweets can be viewed on a map or in your phonebook (the app syncs with your contacts), and more. Unfortunately the app is limited to devices running Android 2.1 and above.

Google Acquires 3D Desktop Manager BumpTop

3D desktop company BumpTop, has been acquired by Google for an undisclosed sum.

For the uninitiated, BumpTop is a 3D, multitouch desktop that's been implemented into the Windows 7 and OS X operating systems. More toy than completely new OS, it's fun to play around with for now, with plenty of potential for later as smartphones and tablets continue to grow in popularity.

No word on what Google plans to do with their new toy, but it probably involves tablets and touchscreens, wouldn't you agree?

LogMeIn Ignition Beta Available for Android

Android: Previously mentioned and Hive Five winning remote desktop tool LogMeIn released a free beta version of their new Android client today, allowing you to access your PC right from your mobile device in just a few taps of your finger.

Similar to the iPhone version, LogMeIn Ignition allows you to remotely access your PC running at home with just a few clicks. It's super quick and easy—in fact, it only took me 10 minutes to make an account, install the software, and get it up and running on my Droid. It's obviously not as smooth as working on your actual PC, but the program is quite speedy given the circumstances—definitely handy for checking if that massive download has finished, or if that large installation gave you an error again (or even to see if anyone else is using your computer at the moment). The controls were pretty easy to get used to, with shortucts for right-clicking, keyboard entry, and even popular keyboard combinations (such as Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Alt+Delete) built right in. And, of course, if you need to read a document that, say, you forgot to upload to Google Docs, you can open it up in Word and zoom in for comfortable mobile reading.

The LogMeIn Ignition beta is available for free in the Android marketplace, although LogMeIn users state that they've been notified that there are a limited number of downloads. So go check it out while you can! No word on pricing once the beta is over with, but we expect it will be similar to the $30 iPhone version.

Google Goggles Can Now Translate Foreign Text From a Picture

Android: Google's Goggles app for Android can now translate foreign text that you capture (and crop) with your phone's camera, potentially helping with signage, papers, and other text found while traveling.

In the update for Android's Google's app, already in the Market, Googles gets both new language translation skills and a crop function that makes Goggles a lot easier to use when pinning down something in particular.

EDIT: For digicel

EDIT 2: Let me elaborate. I'm on a Digicel Unlimted BB plan. Wanted to get the settings to use the EDGE service on an N1 or any Android device for that matter.

NPD: Android ousts iPhone OS for second place in US smartphone market

Image

"We're number two" might not be the chant everyone's after, but we have a feeling that Google is more than satisfied with that in this case... for now. According to market research firm NPD, Google's Android operating system edged up into second place in the US smartphone market during the first quarter of the year, leaving it still well behind RIM's BlackBerry OS, but marking the first time that it has moved ahead of Apple's iPhone OS. Specifically, NPD found that RIM maintained a strong 36 percent market share for the quarter, with Android coming in at 28 percent, and iPhone OS in third at 21 percent.

Wii Controller Demo gets active, Android and Wiimote handle Donkey Kong on video

We knew the Wii Controller Demo app (now known as "Wii Controller IME") was close to being able to interact with Android in a meaningful way, but we certainly didn't expect to see Average Joes playing Donkey Kong on their Nexus One devices this soon.
