Have a tankless same brand as posted above. Similar problem. Bought and installed after warranty period was up.

Have a tank about 10 years now, tank now starting to leak would go back with a tank if it's up to me. Currently have a 30 gallon and covers a entire house. 1 Kitchen. 3 baths. Everything else is regular cold water

Most ppl don't know but a tank heater has a sacrificial anode which is supposed to be replaced every so often
Once it has been totally eroded the tank itself will soon rust and leak after.

It looks like a bolt at the top of the tank.

factor in electricity cost with tank as it has to keep water hot 24/7 whereas the tankless only heats when you use it

and t&tec rates gonna raise sooner or later

only benefit with tank is you have hot water when current go but this is assuming you actually have water from wasa main same time as your pump also wont work

Better to go tankless especially with how well it's working and lasting these days. We used normal home recommended systems in commercial restaurant applications and they holding out 4 years now being used 12-18 hrs a day.

my stiebel went bad,
one of the heater elements appear to be dead, it only produces warm water.
the replacement heater was more than half the price of a new unit.

A friend's went bad also, diff prob, the pressure switch on started sticking
I swapped the good one from mine to his.

Island roofing sells one that I got two years ago and no problems thus far.....came with 3 years warranty......cost me 2k based on the number of outlets I needed. There us a higher and lower priced one.....mine is used for bath, vanity and kitchen lines ( lines connected but seldom used in kitchen ) mainly shower and vanity .....tankless works for me ....thus far

Can't say which is better but i can speak for the AO Smith and Bradford White.

AO Smith - Had one for seven years and needed to be replaced. I realized that sediment buildup caused the inner tank to slowly corrode and leak. Eventually, the outer casing was compromised by the leak and had to be replaced. One of the first places the leak happens is by the lower heating element.

Bradford White - Have one at another location for 10 years and it's still going strong. It's reaching towards the end of its life cycle so some maintenance on it and I should get a few years out of it again. No regrets here.

Both are good brands but from my experience, make sure you put a water filter on the main/source/cold line to prevent sediment buildup inside the water heater. Every 1-2 years, do a flush, inspect your anode rod and check all your water and electrical connections, especially the grounding. Monitor you filter to gauge how often you should change it. Unfortunately for me, every month or two.

Thanks for the summary points on this topic. We decided to go tank. The 2 tankless units we had (wall mounted and over the shower type) failed us and for fear of pumping more money into replacements, we figured a 30gal tank would suffice. I shall update on its performance as time goes.

Oh, I forgot to update that the unit from island roofing comes with 5 years warranty and not 3 years as previously stated

man up and learn the benefits of cold showers. If you can conquer a cold shower on a cold morning, the rest of your day will be a walk in the park.

Had you considered Tankless LPG Heater? I have this for about 5 years now and no issues, serves the entire house.
Best part, is electric bill dropped significantly after dumping my 40 Gal electric WH.

I was not aware of that type of heater. Now that I'm a little more aware as to the options in the market, in the future I would make a more informed decision.

I usually start off with warm water then at the end turn off the heater and take cold water for a minute, I hear that is better as cold water closes your pores so you less vulnerable to getting cold from drafts

A timer coupled with the tank saved me about $75 when I had first checked my electricity bill. Went tank because of the hot water storage when electricity goes. Next time it will be a LPG tankless for me.

You would still have to have water in the main for you to benefit from that during a power outage otherwise that hot water staying right dey in d tank as the pump won't work

Thanks. Was never faced with both utilities being down at the same time so I will guard again one at a time.

We usually get water about 6 hrs/day 3 days a week and it seems that 3 out of 4 times power goes its outside of those hours

What is the gas supply for those water heaters? 100lb LPG cylinder or 20lb LPG cylinder? How long does a tank of gas last? How do you vent it? Similar to a clothes dryer vent?

...and I'm guessing the heat is via a burner inside the unit?
Not sure if I'm comfortable with that flame running unsupervised
