do you mean if anyone every built a NAS using "FreeNAS" ??

if so, yes. I have actually built a few and deployed them as official storage in the company. it works really well!

I need to updrage our servers so I'm thinking of building one to replace the old synology Nas one time (seems to be crashing of late)

What I wanna know is

1. Can I run freenas in VMware esxi?
2. Would I need a hba for pass through?
3. How much drives should I use for optimal reliability and performance?
4. How much ram would I need

Thanks for your assistance

Anything that is an OS will run in ESXI. Obviously meaning based off official platforms.

No need for a host unless you plan to run more drives than the motherboard can support

i recommend nothing less than a simple mirror for redundancy, my favourite is 5+0

definitely nothing less than 8gb if you plan to use it in a 1gbit or higher NIC

oh and if you are using it stand alone ( not virtualization ), which is recommended over VM, please use a SSD. because if your base OS fails ( which contain your passphrases ) your data is locked and lost.

https://www.amazon.com/KingDian-Interna ... s=16gb+ssd

i use these.

Introducing a new version of Steam Play
https://steamcommunity.com/games/221410/announcements/detail/1696055855739350561
As a result of this work, today we are releasing the Beta of a new and improved version of Steam Play to all Linux users! It includes a modified distribution of Wine, called Proton, to provide compatibility with Windows game titles. Here are some of the improvements it brings to the table:

Windows games with no Linux version currently available can now be installed and run directly from the Linux Steam client, complete with native Steamworks and OpenVR support.
DirectX 11 and 12 implementations are now based on Vulkan, resulting in improved game compatibility and reduced performance impact.
Fullscreen support has been improved: fullscreen games will be seamlessly stretched to the desired display without interfering with the native monitor resolution or requiring the use of a virtual desktop.
Improved game controller support: games will automatically recognize all controllers supported by Steam. Expect more out-of-the-box controller compatibility than even the original version of the game.
Performance for multi-threaded games has been greatly improved compared to vanilla Wine.

This goes hand-in-hand with an ongoing testing effort of the entire Steam catalog, in order to identify games that currently work great in this compatibility environment, and find and address issues for the ones that don't. The initial set of supported games that we are enabling with this initial Beta release is as follows:

Beat Saber
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
Doki Doki Literature Club!
DOOM
DOOM II: Hell on Earth
DOOM VFR
Fallout Shelter
FATE
FINAL FANTASY VI
Geometry Dash
Google Earth VR
Into The Breach
Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012
Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013
Mount & Blade
Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
NieR: Automata
PAYDAY: The Heist
QUAKE
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Tekken 7
The Last Remnant
Tropico 4
Ultimate Doom
Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Dark Crusade
Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Soulstorm

We will be enabling more titles in the near future as testing results and development efforts progress; in the meantime, enthusiast users are also able to try playing non-whitelisted games using an override switch in the Steam client. Going forward, users can vote for their favorite games to be considered for Steam Play using platform wishlisting.

Steam Play whitelisted games will not be offered for purchase or marked as supported on Linux on the Store during the initial Beta period.

So right now I have this.

Board capable of taking 32gb of ram. Looking to up it to about 16gb. Anything wrong there? Budget is approx USD$100.00

Board is ASRock FM2A68M-DG3+

AMD A4-4000 processor

Want it as snappy as my Samsung s8. Image

will this work:

Patriot 16GB(2x8GB) Viper III DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800) CL9 Desktop Memory With Black Mamba Heatsink - PV316G160C9K https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTJJJ0/re ... RBbZH50YA1

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to get extra RAM if your programs aren't memory limited...

It is also a dual core processor with not a lot to give

If you want snappy response... Use the same money and Get an SSD.

i wouldn't pump any more money into that, 8gb is about the max you should go with that in all honestly unless you getting ddr3 ram really really cheap

Recommend me a better processor guys.
So just drop in another 4gb stick and a new processor then?

Normal implies email, browsing, some word processing.

I believe that you can go to an A8 or A10. Unless you have a lot of windows open or working on large data sets, you probably won't notice anything above 8 GB of ram.

You may want to just trade up and get a PC with the type of processing speed that you are interested in.

Have an A10 6800K 4.1ghz stock/4.4ghz turbo Quad core and a single 4GB Kingston 1333Mhz DDR3 ram module for $500 if you interested in upgrading,
Don't really see much quad core apus for this socket often.

Your motherboard supports the APU as well.

Unless you need your PC right away
Save and get something like a ryzen 3 2200g

4 ryzen cores
Comes with a cpu cooler
$100 usd

You can get a B series ryzen motherboard for $75

Only downside is ddr4 prices... But you can start with a 4gb stick

Up to you if you want to stick with a processor that's almost 6 years old

Hcca's a10 should be a great upgrade from your a4as well... It may be the best performance per dollar way to go

Also, is just to drop in the processor? Or do I need to do anything like reinstall windows or some software stuff?

After reading a few of your posts:
4 GB of RAM
2 SSDs
A4 processor
Lots of memory demands
Not sure how to upgrade a processor
Not sure if you need a BIOS uPdate
Not sure if RAM match is important

It sounds to me as if you are crushing a 6 year old system and would definitely benefit from just buying a new system that has 8 GB or more.

Nearly any 2018 system will benchmark much faster. Add one of your SSDs as a boot drive later and sell what you have. Total cost under TT$4500, if you can afford it.
