Opening a go-kart/dex/drift track in trinidad? your views

Postby Jon_One » August 19th, 2010, 12:05 pm

I am considering opening/building a go-kart track with some go-karts which i intend to build (i have some madd fabrication skills) and some other small simple rides / tracks .. I am hoping that if i also have a dirt track i could invite people who race dirt bikes etc. for a "race day" and also the same with my go-kart track.. i also intend to have smaller rides for little kids..
i would like to get some of your views on how my market would be for something like this.. i would be mostly independent on building everything to cut costs etc..
and also where would be the ideal location w.r.t prices of land and accessibility.. thanks

^ no license I can think of, just make sure you have good public liability insurance
I think it will be very profitable once your safety and facilities standard is high.

IMO the initial investment will be high

This is a great idea man!
Was discussing this with some friends a few weeks ago...some of them griping about there not being any facility to actually engage in a little go cart racing.
Keep to the idea..got my support!

build a small track so that we can do drfiting, solodex and karting on it!
nothing too big (about the size of ARC but with a real course and curbs etc, just small and wide enough for cars to drive around - NOT race side by side - but one at a time solodex, drifting etc..)

something like this
Image
this way it can be configured many ways for different events etc..
http://www.sokarters.org/tracklayouts.asp

this way it will always be used, even during the week, when drifters and street cars can come and get sideways with their bumpers tied on with zip ties ;) and on weekends the karts and come and take advantage of all the rubber put down ;)

As its small you can control to crowd etc, i really support this idea..

You can probably add a roller skating area also, not too sure if there is one in trinidad

wow!! better support than i expected!! alright the cost of me building my own carts would be very low since i would have equipment to do so just now ... the hardest / most expensive thing would be the engines.. i love the idea of making the track wide enough for cars! how big a piece of land do you think i would need? i would also like to have a little dirt bike track @ the side somewhere !

Jon check this out for ideas of small commercial kart designs

http://gokartdeals.com/

(some cheap options there too, but shipping would kill ya, but buying one to duplicate wouldn't be a bad idea)

refurbished weedwacker engines could be a option.. sure you can find bulk used engines and refurb them.. things can add up quick, but making the track, and it being able to be used by people like me during the week, would help pay for this entire venture eventually..

but location location location is key, even though i would drive most anywhere for a lil track like this and the karting men would use it..

and having it able to be configured in different ways allows you to run kiddie karts and junior tracks etc..

Thanks! how wallerfield sounding?

I am thinking that i could buy 6 or 8 go-karts and build the rest custom..

but right now i am thinking that land might be a issue..
and then the next thing would be paving ... anyone has an idea on price to pave say 1/2mile to 3/4mile of track?

This really makes the most sense ... this is the same multi use track posted before showing some of its different ways..

if designed good enough i could have two small races goin on @ the sametime

IMO the only real profitable tracks WRT karting are indoor tracks with relatively smooth surfaces - hard pitch with stone will DESTROY tires - and them tings nat cheep

i agree, indoor would make it a lil family lime, kinda like a skating arena, you could even rent lil booths inside to fast food restaurants!!!

Start off small.
Nothing wrong with locating a disused/non-functional quarry (or work out an agreement with one that has specific non-operational time) and have a talk with the the owner. I'm sure he wouldn't mind a decent percentage of the 'gate', provided you leave the place as you found it... and he can also ensure that whichever roadways inside the quarry you use are kept in fairly decent condition - which he would do, anyway.
Especially since Trinis love to 'rough up' other people's equipment, if you are providing the karts, drivers will come.
Apart from drivers paying a fee to rent the kart, and you collecting whatever's left after the owner/landlord gets a percentage of the 'gate', there are other ways of producing an income. You also have 'vending rights', that is, vendors can give you a commission when they get settled - or you can do the vending of food/drinks, and all other vendors pay a commission.
Spectators have to pay at the 'gate'... the great thing about this idea is that the sport will highly unlikely be easily visible from the roadway - no 'park and gape' gang. The quarry would have a watchman at the entrance anyway, who already gets a salary to keep undesirables out - but give him something to keep him agreeable.
You can charge an additional fee for sheltered areas (you provide it, so that's your take) and cheapos can park and watch. (You need to control the parking, so have a designated area for cheapos to park where they can observe the fun - it doesn't have to be too comfortable.)
Fanatics will want to build and bring their own karts to race alongside yours. There are fees for that - one "MUST" buy the specs from you in order to "register" as compatible with whatever class you designate, and the "scrutineer fee" has to be paid when it is finished and you look over it to ensure it is built as it was "registered".
Fanatics will also want to build and bring their own karts to race on their own. There will be "club fees" to pay to cover that.
You will have a shelter for "pit" for your units, but drivers who are allowed to bring in their own karts could have the option of renting a covered "pit area" for their team.

Any of the more decent autosport groups should be able to advise you on a simple insurance policy - check the Solodex folks.

Good luck!

thanks...

i have access to land in wallerfield..
so the land is covered..
i am thinking that the buildings could be containers for now...
now i just need to design my track , build pits and vending areas , car park and dirt bike track!!

the track has to be wide enough for drifting ,anyone could give me an idea on how wide it should be?

my targeted customers would be :- karters, drifters, dexers, bikers/atv..
