Local Ochro ~ Facts

Prevents Diabetes

The presence of Eugenol in Ochro helps fight against diabetes. The fibre also helps stabilize blood sugar level by delaying sugar absorption from the intestines.

Improves Immunity

The high Vitamin C content in Ochro helps fight cold and cough by encouraging a healthy immune system. The Vitamin C and many essential minerals like magnesium, manganese, calcium and iron in Ochro also fight against harmful free radicals and therefore promote an overall healthy immune system.

Prevents Constipation

Ochro is one of the best vegetable sources of dietary fibre essential for the digestive system. Dietary fibres in Ochro help prevent and relieve constipation. The soluble fibre in Ochro absorbs water and adds bulk to the stool thus preventing constipation.

Stronger bones

Ochro is rich in vitamin K. Vitamin K improves calcium absorption, reduces urinary excretion of calcium, and acts as a modifier of bone matrix proteins and fight osteoporosis.

Visual health

Ochro is an excellent source for beta-carotene, xanthein, and lutein. These antioxidants seek and neutralize harmful biological waste that can disrupt cellular metabolism, increase degradation of cells in the body, and impair vision. Antioxidants can protect your eyesight from macular degeneration and cataracts.

No cholesterol

Ochro itself contains no cholesterol and very little fat. This makes it an excellent food to replace high cholesterol fatty foods, such as rich desserts and fatty meats, with.

Ochro also contains high amounts of pectin, which helps decrease blood cholesterol levels by interfering with bile absorption in the intestines and forcing the liver to use circulating cholesterol to make more bile.

Weight Loss

Ochro is low in calories. A one and a half cup serving of okra contains just 18 calories. As mentioned, it is also a good source of antioxidant vitamins A and C, as well as folate. All of these factors, combined with the high fiber content, make it a great vegetable for weight loss.

Asthma

Good for asthma, it contains vitamin C which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, curtailing the development of asthma symptoms.

Heal Ulcer

Used for healing ulcers and to keep joints limber. It helps to neutralize acids, being very alkaline, and provides a temporary protective coating for the digestive tract.

More Fiber

The superior fiber found in Ochro helps to stabilize the blood sugar by curbing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from within the intestinal tract.

Kidney Disease

One study published in the October 2005 Jilin Medical Journal found that regular consumption of Ochro can help prevent kidney disease. In the study, “those who ate Ochro daily reduced clinical signs of kidney damage more than those that simply ate a diabetic diet.” This also ties in with diabetes, as nearly 50% of kidney disease cases are caused by diabetes.

Healthy Skin

Vitamin C helps keep the skin looking young and vibrant. The vitamin aids in the growth and repair of bodily tissues, which affects collagen formation and skin pigmentation, and helps to rejuvenate damaged skin. Ochro is full of vitamin C. Topical tip: Boil a handful of Ochro until soft. After letting it cool, mash it, and apply it to your face. After 5 minutes, your skin should feel smooth and rejuvenated.

Local Great Race ~ Ole' Time Days - 1

What the Great Race meant to us in the 70s and 80s

The Tardieus, Wallaces, Alves and Elms families were born fishermen.

Boat builders and men who KNEW the sea.

For us youngsters growing up, the august holidays were spent almost entirely down the Islands...namely Monos, Maurice and Scotland Bay where our roots are.

And we followed the Great Race religiously, some of us working alongside legendary boat builders like the late great Brian Bowen.

In the late 70's very few boats had race engines and many made do with outboards.

We raced 21' Scott hulls, 24' Auarius' even a few Lelums...the well to do raced Hustlers and Glastrons....but in those days there was camaraderie...a brotherhood.

I could remember my cousin Richard "Ribs" Tardieu taking a 21 Scott and in his first Great Race with a measly 85hp Johnson hittin the North to reach Tobago.

It was when he slapped on a then behemoth 200hp loop-charged Johnson that us kids went Great Race crazy

We'd come running down to the jetty everytime Ribs and Winston went to try out the boat....I could remember how much problems they had getting it to get up on plane...and the chine walking the Scotts were famous for...and hahahaha> the porpoising that the boat would do EVEN in flat calm water.

It was when boats like Honkey, Beep Beep, (we loved the exhaust tubes stickin out the hatch covers!) Top Gun, King Sailor, Black Max, Blaze and Cutting Edge came on the scene that things started to get really exciting!

Now the big boys like Solo & Checkmate had competition!

Every August I'd go down to Chaguaramas to see the men work til daylight to get their boats ready.

And as I grew up, I'd be there with them, helping.

It used to be such a fun place and time to have lived in!

Local Great Race ~ Ole' Time Days - 2

Everyone loved Mr Solo and we all knew Ken Charles and his sons.

They were the boat to beat, but never really flaunted it.

The boat of choice was a Bowen deep v and Brian couldnt build them fast enough.

Richard, Winston, Robert and Winston Tardieu switched to a 28foot Bowen somewhere in the late 80s and dominated the Sportman2 class...with big money outfits like Miss Apple J, Mr Yamaha, Solo Bentley...and even Gypsy Peters had a boat in those days...The Four Js.

Ian Keizer in his Rite Formula was another grass roots racer...an engine builder of much experience and was always a true sportsman.

But we all looked forward to the rivalry between the 4 big boats of the day: Mr Solo, Checkmate, King Sailor, ( I would later in my 30s be the one who turned King Sailor into a FERRY for a company that bought her shell) Top Gun and Rage! But as young ones growing up in and around Power Boats in Chag, we not only admired the boats but the drivers as well...

Like Sabga and Crooks in Checkmate and the Lee boys in Royal Flush, and there were the Sabeeneys, DeGannes, Shakeer and the saga boy Peter Peake in his Kiss of Fire ( Peter really went all out on that boat...the paint job was phenomenal!

He hung the boat by its nose and allowed the paint to "bleed" down the sides) BUT....she was too narrow and would chine walk like a ho.

Still...the boat to beat was Solo...and then the era of the Catamaran arrived...and even a foreign team or two...claiming victory long before they even reached T&T!

A boat named Fury...but Mr Solo straightened them out good...

I could remember Gino Fusco dancin on the bow after they beat them....

And with these new boats came a new hype! No Mono hull had ever gone a 100mph before (Rage was perhaps the only boat that could do 90mph plus...if it held together, but she did beat Mr Solo one year by only a few minutes!) and here was this new boat from Mr Solo boasting of reaching that 100mph mark and more.

The sound these big block motors made coming through the First Boca made us go wild with excitement!

They thundered past the Dragons Mouth, Solo ALWAYS hugging the shoreline...taking the first set of "sleeping policemen" in an always level and trimmed fashion....oh we loved to see the novices fly straight up almost blowing over only to yank the throttle back and fall beff, right back down and be almost dead in the water and with back pains too!

Many a team hurt their backs in these days....even some of the big guns had to "limp" up the coast because their throttleman damaged his back in the rough waters.

I remember some srories of the Checkmate crew... Carlos Sabga was a true seaman and a genuine sportsman...one time jumping overboard off Puerto Rico to save the life of a fellow racer who had been thrown overboard...and he was LEADING the race at the time!....I also looked up to the Crooks brothers...real cool fellas...one died in a plane crash and the other of cancer...just like Carlos.

They were heroes to us back then.

Local Hunting ~ Facts

Hunter the Killer.

Today hunting is frowned upon by many who derive their meat products from the Groceries, and many believe meat in fact were never alive and belonged to an animal which was slaughtered and its meat packaged for them at the grocery.

The blood, the skin and gut have been removed and the meat packaged in plastic and refridgerators.

Many did not hear bellowing of the cows and bleeting of the goats nor the squeals of the pigs as their lives were taken to provide meat for the meat eating population.

Poultry die almost without sounds due to the speed its wind pipe is servered.

These animals were all once wild, it is the hunters who first captured these animals and attempted to rear them in captivity.

Today many species are in captivity, reared and produce meat in exchange for food and protection. They are slaughtered at will by the owners, they buy the corn they own the meat.

The life of the animal has no consideration other than to remain healthy untill the day of slaughter. What about the wild family of these domesticated species?

They are extinct, man has brutalized and destroyed their habitats their only chance of survival today is in the relationship of owner and animal." If I feed you, I will eat you ,kill you or dispose of you how I choose .

Your choice is to convert my feed into your meat. "

Local Caterpillar

Remarkable Colors, but has Anti-Predator Adaptations

Its Consumption of Toxic Plants makes it Distasteful to most Predators

An exception is the Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani), which tears the Caterpillar Apart to Eat it, avoiding the Gut containing the Plant Material.

The Caterpillar is also Coated in Barbed Urticating Hairs, which Stick Deeply in Skin and Cause Irritation.

If caught, the Caterpillar Bites
