PUBLIC ADVISORY
August 10, 2010 – 6:00 p.m

High water levels may cause possible evacuation of areas

Based on the heavy rainfall and continued run off into the rivers, the water levels in all rivers remain quite high. Of particular concern at this moment is the Caroni River whose water levels are still rather high. In light of this, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services has advised that residents who live in the areas that lie in the Caroni River Basin such as St Helena, Kelly Village, Frederick Settlement, La Paille and Las Lomas must remain vigilant and cautious at this time.

To treat with the possibility of riverine flooding, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management has activated and furnished two relief shelters with the necessary bedding, food and water to cater for the needs of persons who may be affected by any over spilling of the Caroni River. These shelters are the Eastern Regional Sporting Complex (Tacarigua) and the Tunapuna Government Secondary School.

If relocation of persons is necessary, PTSC buses will be waiting at the venues listed hereunder for transfer to the shelters:-

• St. Helena Junction
• Chin Chin Junction
• Las Lomas RC School
• Frederick Settlement Sporting Facility

Consequently, affected persons are asked to walk with:-

• Complete change of clothes
• Extra pair of shoes
• Extra socks
• Extra underwear
• Toothbrush, deodorant, towel and bath soaps
• Important documents such as passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, driver’s licence, wills and deeds in a sealed plastic bag
• Personal medication

The ODPM reminds citizens that the emergency relief shelters will only provide the following:

• Food, water and bedding (cots, mattresses and blankets)

Some additional safety tips are:-

• Stay calm but remain vigilant and cautious at this time
• Secure valuables and all important documents in waterproof containers or bags
• Elevate all appliances and valuable items
• Turn off all utilities such as electricity, gas and water at the main switches. Do not touch electrical equipment
• Secure all pets and livestock
• Do not walk / drive through flood waters unless absolutely necessary
• Park vehicles in places that will not become easily inundated
• Be aware of possible landslides and landslips.

The ODPM, as the coordinator and manager of emergencies has alerted the first responder agencies (Municipal Corporations, the TT Fire Service and TT Defence Force) to render continued assistance as required. Further information will be communicated as necessary.

Please note that Trinidad and Tobago is NOT under any Tropical Storm threat, Watch or Warning.

flood bulletin still in effect though

http://metoffice.gov.tt/bulletins/article.aspx?id=5989
Bulletin#4

Date: Wednesday 11th of August 2010
ISSUED AT:06:50AM

This bulletin updates Flood Bulletin 3 issued at
6:00 pm yesterday.
Rainfall activity would continue to affect
Trinidad and Tobago today, which would serve to
recharge overnight discharges including those of
the Caroni River.

We expect heavy showers and isolated thunder
showers to begin by midday and continue into
tonight. This additional rainfall plus any run
off from overnight rain are sufficient to warrant
deep concerns of flooding especially if tidal
effects are considered.

Citizens residing in the Caroni River Basin in
particular are being urgently advised to take
IMMEDIATE ACTION against flooding scenarios to
preserve life and property.

All other Citizens who may be affected one way or
the other are requested to exercise due care and
attention and adopt measures which properly
address this latest development.

WE AGAIN UNDERSCORE THAT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS
NOT UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM THREAT, WATCH OR
WARNING AT THIS TIME.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is
closely monitoring weather conditions and will
issue another bulletin at 6:00pm today or earlier
if warranted.

the low pressure system moved north last night into this morning
there is still a tropical wave about to pass us though but that low may be keeping all the thundershowers to itself

http://metoffice.gov.tt/bulletins/article.aspx?id=5981

Bulletin#

Date: Wednesday 11th of August 2010
ISSUED AT:12:17PM

ITCZ AND LOCALISED UNSTABLE CONDITIONS TO AFFECT
WEATHER OVER TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO.

Trinidad and Tobago would be affected by both
local unstable conditions and the Inter-tropical
Convergence Zone producing cloudy to overcast
skies with occasional showers and isolated
thundershowers.

These conditions are expected to last for most of
the day and into the night. The showery and
thundery spells will produce street/flash
flooding and accompanying gusty winds.
Landslides/landslips are also possible
given
recent rainfall events. Small water courses would
be inundated. There would be further addition to
already swollen river courses, which would
recharge earlier run off.

Citizens are advised to be vigilant and cautious
given the weather conditions both current and
forecast, as they conduct their daily activities.
All necessary measures must be adopted to preserve
life and property. Be alert to any discharges from
thunderstorm activity.

Please note that a Flood Bulletin is still in
effect!

We wish to underscore that at this time Trinidad
and Tobago is NOT under any Tropical Storm
threat, Watch or Warning.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services is
closely monitoring this weather situation and will
issue another bulletin if the situation warrants.

Looking outside I can see heavy buildup of clouds beginning in deep south. Met Office Doppler radar images also show the increase in cloud formation and intensity. This is probably the effects of the ITCZ being pulled north towards Trinidad and Tobago by the passing tropical wave.

Whilst North Trinidad seems reasonable clear at this time there are signs that there is a slow buildup of clouds beginning in the south east also. Only time will tell if this will worsen but it certainly isn't convection as a result of daytime heating (too early).

Can any 2nrs in the Point Fortin, Siparia and/or Rio Claro regions say whats happening in your area?
