PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO -

SPIRITUAL BAPTIST LIBERATION DAY 2013
&
CORPUS CHRISTI AND INDIAN ARRIVAL DAY 2013

Public Holidays are authorized by law and limits work or official business on those dates. Therefore, all Government Offices, Banks and most businesses are closed on Public Holidays in Trinidad and Tobago.
Spiritual Baptist Liberation Day, Saturday 30th March, 2013.

There are no provisions in legislation where, if a public holiday falls on a Saturday that another day be given in recognition of that holiday. However, it may be enshrined in Collective Agreement clauses that when a public holiday falls on a Saturday it shall be observed on the preceding day. As a result, “only” persons under such a Collective Agreement would be subjected to an additional holiday,
which in this instance would be Thursday 28th March, 2013 since Friday 29th March (Good Friday) is already a public holiday.

Corpus Christi and Indian Arrival Day, Thursday 30th May, 2013.

According to the Public Holidays & Festivals Act Chapter 19:05, Act 10 of 1872, Amended by 104/2002, Section 3 (2) states:
“where a public holiday falls on a Sunday or where two (2) holidays fall on the same day, the next following day that (apart from this subsection) is not a public holiday shall be a public holiday”.

As a consequence, two (2) public holidays fall on Thursday 30th May, 2013 and according to law where two (2) holidays fall on the same day, the next following day that is not a public holiday shall be a public holiday.

As a result, Friday 31st May, 2013 will be a public holiday.

Employers are advised to take cognizance of this and be prepared to treat with it accordingly.

Holiday today...only for NUGFW members
Story Created: Mar 27, 2013 at 10:55 PM ECT
Story Updated: Mar 27, 2013 at 11:03 PM ECT
The long weekend is even longer for Government daily-rated workers—the lucky few who officially get today off.
Several members of the public were curious as to whether or not a national holiday would (at the last minute) be proclaimed today.
The Express contacted the Office of the Chief Personnel Officer for clarification on just who can legitimately stay home today because of such a situation. Because of a long-standing agreement negotiated between the Government and the union representing these workers, the National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW), when a public holiday falls on a Saturday, the workers will get the Friday off.
In this case, Saturday is Spiritual Shouter Baptist Liberation Day and Friday is another public holiday, Good Friday, so workers will get today, commonly called Holy Thursday, off.
The NUGFW's Facebook page lists its membership at about 20,000, with about 15,000 Government workers represented.
