A police constable with over 15 years service created a major scare for bathers and limers at the popular Caura River on Saturday afternoon when he allegedly took out a personal firearm and began firing shots into the air.
The officer, who is based in the Southern Division as a CID officer, is one of the many junior officers issued personal firearms by the Office of the Commissioner of Police.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard is expected to decide today whether charges should be laid against a Southern Division police constable who allegedly brandished and fired his gun while at Caura River on Saturday. Public information officer of the T&T Police Service Insp Wayne Mystar confirmed that a police file on the matter has been submitted to the DPP for instructions. “A file was sent to the DPP for instruction. Investigations are continuing. The officer is not in custody. “The officer was allowed to leave pending investigations and we await the instructions from the DPP. He (the officer) is not on suspension,” Mystar said yesterday.

According to a report, the police constable, with over 15 years of service, was seen showing his personal firearm around 4 pm on Saturday at the popular liming spot and firing some shots into the air. Mystar said once “there is evidence to support these allegations, which is of course a serious offence, the necessary action will be taken and the officer will be dealt with according to the law.” He added that the police service “will not stand for such action and behaviour like that as it relates to firearms.” Attempts yesterday to reach Police Complaints Authority chairman Gillian Lucky for comment were unsuccessful as calls to her cellphone went unanswered.
