At least eight persons have been confirmed dead, while three remained unaccounted for Wednesday afternoon — Christmas Day — after heavy rains overnight triggered extensive flooding and damage to infrastructure in St. Vincent.

The loss of life was most significant in North Leeward, in northwest St. Vincent, where five members of one household died when a slope collapsed unto their house in Rose Bank.

One person died in Byera on the western side of the country and 43-year-old Desmond Wilson died after being swept away by floodwaters Tuesday night in the South Leeward community of Vermont.

The body of 18-year-old Kesla James, who, along with her 2-year-old niece, was washed away in Cane Grove, was recovered in the Central Leeward community midmorning Wednesday.

Inka Jack, 12, and Josell Small, an employee of Buccament Bay Resort, both of whom were swept away by floodwaters at separate locations in Buccament Bay Tuesday night, were still unaccounted for.

The following were requested:

1. Canned Goods
2. Biscuits
3. Infant Formula
4. Water
5. Mattresses
6. Blankets
7. Hygiene Kits
8. Disaster Kits
9. First Aid Kits
10. Any other as necessary

The Government, through the ODPM, has initiated this process and has used one of its five pre-positioned and pre-packed containers to send immediately as well as to source another 40 feet container to send 150 mattresses.

The ODPM has commenced packing of these two 40 feet containers and is expected to be ready to ship to Saint Lucia by 1:00 pm today - on Thursday 26th December 2013.

No requests have come from the other affected islands as yet

A Christmas Day trail of death and destruction caused by a powerful weather system swept across the Eastern Caribbean islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Dominica yesterday, leaving 18 dead and several others missing up to press time.

All the aid we give to the countries when they have been hit by disaster. But come to think of it, no one helps us. That's 4qed up.
