Makes sense, I pretty much rather not drive near such so I have no problem with them going their merry way. What I do have a problem with however is the disregard for traffic lights, sirens and instructions from uniformed law enforcement by the average Trinidadian. Too often people are yapping on their phones or fiddling with their car stereos to pay attention to what is occurring near them on the roads. Worse yet, female drivers have overtaken truck and maxi drivers in the amount of bad drives you see these days

Why is it that police cars always have their blue lights activated? Shouldn't that only be used in the event of an emergency? I could never understand this practice.

Agreed..also the Ambulances, TTPost men etc seem to think that it is fine to use whatever lights they have regardless of what they are doing.

Is there the possibility that the driver that crashed may have become nonchalant to the fact there were blue light flashing? I mean after seeing police with thier blue lights flashing for no reason day after day... no longer think that the blue lights meant urgency and assume it was safe to go?

Blues and twos are there for a reason and neither ever seem to be used correctly...anyway another day where this kinda toots is accepted is another day it will continue

It is, parts were damaged in the collision which is preventing the crane from moving. Some ppl were coming to inspect the crane before it could move.

anybody can hire police to get escort. Many of the cycling groups do it now for safety.

Motorbike outriders only work daytime though, I think their union does not allow motorbike cops to work at night.

The motorbike ones usually stop on the junction would block a car from proceeding like what happened in this case.

The car cops probably might have been a bit lax.

I seem to remember that certain types of equipment when needed to be move via public roads require a letter from the licensing authority for said right to move.
The authorization stipulates police escort etc.
The equipment we used to move was a Grove Crane registration starting 'X'.
The police would configure their escort appropriately.
It should be noted that the authority recd was always very precise about route and allowed timeframe for move to be completed.
I have noticed over the last few years that police escorts for these moves have become very poorly structured with in some cases only one motor cycle and very poor obvious lighting provisions to warn normal road users.
What I recall was front and rear escorts, tight convoy pattern and sometimes lead vehicle. In all case for nite movements warning lights galore.
Apparently today, anything goes and is drivers figure it out.
Crane movements was always a big thing to execute since use of public roads was like a concession basis only.
We just seem be going in a backward direction with most things.

That's how it used to be, I enjoyed being a pilot on those moves. Yes the police would stop traffic at lights, but it used to be a smooth and steady pace with more than one police vehicle and lots of lights from the trucks.
What I remember is that the police would come in the yard and finalise the best route available with the drivers and we were on our way. And whenever approaching an intersection the police vehicle at the rear of the convoy would speed ahead and make sure the coast was clear and safe to cross.

Either those officers were not knowledgeable of how to pilot convoys or they were just lazy.

This gets me mad every time, many times I see officers cruising along the road with their lights on, high beams as well, for no reason. Just blinding incoming traffic

pete wrote:I think it's more the police want to get the job over as quick as possible to get back to sleeping in the station.

How could it be safer to have this hazardous equipment breaking traffic lights or having people forced to the side of the road for it to pass in standstill traffic when the equipment or truck transporting it can just stop as everyone else does?

It's not going to fall over or cause the road to collapse. Yeah I hear what you're saying that the police say go ahead and you're following instructions. That doesn't make what the police are telling you to do correct.

*edit* Same goes for when they're transporting explosives. Sure they may only get the cargo cleared at 3PM. Surely it would be much safer to keep the explosives in a secure location until 6pm on the port rather than squeeze through Wrightson road traffic and possibly Beetham traffic at peak traffic times? Every time I see that I just hope that doesn't something happen cause if it does..

pete i hear you and agree. usually when one is getting a permit to move equipment, Ministry of transport and traffic branch usually give you a permit for X amount of time to get the job done so thats why the outriders etc are necessary. I agree sometimes there are risk that can be avoided but this is sweet trini.
