We want Insp Singh
By GARY DARMANIE Friday, May 15 2009
SEVERAL youths from Picton Street in Laventille yesterday called on Inspector Sahadeo Singh to accompany them to the Block Eight turf of a rival gang, so they (the Picton youths) could discuss a peace deal to end the gang war which has claimed many lives in the area.
When Newsday returned to Picton Street yesterday — the scene of a tense face-off between residents and police earlier this week, residents praised Inspector Singh and officers under his command for keeping the area in order.
“When Singh comes here he does his job. If he has information, he will rub down (search) who he has to rub down and take down who he has to take down,” a young man said. “He (Singh) doesn’t curse anybody or harass anybody. Everybody in Laventille knows that, so everybody respects the man for doing his job,” the youth added.
The young men said they wanted Singh along with some of his officers who they believe are “good and exemplary officers” to accompany them to Block Eight so they could negotiate and bring an end to the gang war in the area.
“We fed-up with this war. We do not want any war. If Singh could go with us down there everybody will be safe because everybody respects him,” one young man said. Another youth added that such a move would bring out the “heads” so that a real truce could be derived.
However, the same young men condemned the action of other police officers in the area. They said a certain group of officers would come into the area and harass youths for no reason. They also said these same officers have earned the title of “48 hours” as they would often randomly pick up youths and have them incarcerated for a period of 48 hours, without charge.
