Abu Bakr arrested at Norman Manley Airport, Jamaica

http://loopjamaica.com/2014/10/15/latest-jamaica-news-yasin-abu-bakr-arrested-at-norman-manley-airport/

15/10/2014 (16:07)

Leader of the Trinidadian muslim group Jamaat al Muslimeen, Yasin Abu Bakr has been arrested by the Jamaican authorities at the Norman Manley International Airport.

His arrest was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner in Charge of the crime portfolio, Glenmore Hinds.

“Yes he has been arrested. I don’t know all the details as it could be an immigration matter but I can confirm that he was arrested as he attempted to enter the country,” Hinds said.

In 1990, 114 members of the Jamaat al Muslimeen attempted to stage a coup against the government of Trinidad and Tobago.

Forty-two insurgents stormed the Red House, the seat of Parliament, and took Prime Minister ANR Robinson and most of his cabinet hostage, while seventy-two of their accomplices attacked the offices of Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT), and the Trinidad Broadcasting Company, then one of only two radio stations in the country.

Abu Bakr appeared on television and announced that the government had been overthrown and that he was negotiating with the army.

He called for calm and said that there should be no looting.

Robinson was beaten and shot when he tried to order the army to attack the militants.

The army and the police responded by sealing off the area around the Red House and, after six days of negotiations, the Muslims surrendered and were taken into custody.

They were freed after a court upheld an amnesty offered to allow for their surrender.

Abu Bakr has been suspected of involvement in criminal activities, including the drug trade.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican authorities today arrested Trinidad’s Jamaat al Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

They just refused him entry because of his infamy and his fame.

They wanted someone high profile for it to make news here.

Retaliation is afoot but its on the wrong ppl though

what are you on about?

i see nothing wrong here...they didn't want an undesirable person in their country and they denied him entry and sending him back......hundreds, if not, thousands of people with legitimate business move in both directions daily without any problems......

I don't fault him. If he came on first class send him back first class.

JA just playing games, I heard they let him in 2007, they were just looking for an occasion to play tit for tat with TT.

As a region, we are too small to be playing these games.

Well JA couldn't have made a worse pick if they're trying to irk us, since most right thinking Trinis agree he should be rotting in jail and not jet-setting to anywhere.

Hard to imagine Jamaica's refusal to let a known terrorist into their country could be a slight against a Trinidad.

If only a convenient administrative error could keep him in a holding cell for a little while...

Even if its tit for tat...Jamaica has a right to refuse entry to a known terrorist and insurrectionist. Good job JA
