Water won't wash it off, you have to use a de-greaser eg. purple blaster or kerosene.

better go to a engine wash place and pay them the $50 to do it instead of making a mess at home

Put oil back, engine wash or purple blaster. Can't leave on PB too long / more than a minute before washing off. Also careful on aluminum parts of engine, will corrode badly.

Can drive with the oil, will burn off on exhaust.

Some kerosene will wash that off. If you drive for long with it there, it will dry and be more difficult to remove.. you can even use gas but need to make sure it dries totally before restarting the engine.

Hey man, if you never washed your engine before and you need to have it done urgently
take it to a shop does it, because if you're not sure what your doing, you can cause more harm than good....trust me.

May need to pressure test your head & block, most likely it has warped.
