I use gogogate for my Remote gate (TAU motor). It works great and gives notification every time the gate is open. It also allows me to give guest access to persons for certain time periods.

http://www.gogogate.com

Simple setup even a caveman can do it.

In for info on smart locks and nest thermostats

I currently use a Logitech Harmony Ultimate Home

it can work with electric gates, garage doors, lights, a/c units, fans, tv, radio, playstation, xbox, appletv, kitchen appliances, computers, just about any electronic device. Just put in the model number in the remote and it downloads the controls for that device to the remote via wifi. Unbelievable simple. COntrol from the remote or your smartphone.

automation is cool.

but in trini we have frequent electricity interruptions/ no internet periods which would render alot of these smart devices useless.

You would be surprised at the level of tech in some buildings/homes in trinidad. An engineer buddy of mine just finished another training course for honeywell in NC, and is due back next week. From AG office to homes that appear to be hidden in hills of santa cruz, its amazing. Stuff like walking in a room, seats flip out, ac & lights on, touch & voice control in every room, embedded chips in clothing/under skin. You request it and they make it happen. Also heinously expensive.

With open source hardware and software all of this can be achieved on the cheap (relatively) but there is a learning curve attached.
