A Special Reserve Police officer was shot and killed by another officer at the Guapo Police Station, in what police initially believe may have been an accident.

The slain officer is identified as Govindra Ramroop, an SRP attached to the La Brea Rapid Response Unit.

Police say at 12.08 this morning, Ramroop and another SRP were at the Guapo Police Station when the other officer was cleaning his firearm.

The officers had just returned from a police exercise.

CNC3 understands the officer's firearm went off hitting Ramroop in the lower abdomen.

PC Ramroop was rushed to the Point Fortin Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12.45 am.

The police service tells CNC3 an investigation is now underway.

Acting Commissioner of Police Harold Phillip extended condolences to the slain officer's family.

RIP officer Ramroop.

This is what happens when ppl mistake firearms training as just something you do once and thats it. I dont understand why TTPS finds it so difficult to have an officer as a dedicated armorer & gunsmith in each station that would clean and repair/maintain govt weapons. That alone would wipe out these types of instances of negligent discharge.

But this is Trinidad. Sensible practices is the one thing the powers that be dont try to encourage.

SRP's in my opinion are not properly trained, they are rushed through a few weeks of training to make up numbers. I recently saw a new female srp with a new ttps sig sauer in her holster, she had the hammer cocked and probably wasn't even aware of it. On the same day I saw a task force constable trying to clear an MP5, after removing the mag he fumbled with the slide about 6 or 7 times before he was able to clear the chamber. Needless to say the round hit the ground and the casing might have been damaged but who checks that right? And he cleared the weapon in an area of the station that was not designated for such.

All this aside the inside word is that them srp's were playing with the firearm when the accidental discharge occurred.

So the TTPS really expect citizens to believe that a person trained to use a firearm was cleaning a loaded gun.
Condolences to the family of the deceased officer.

Happens all the time...all over the world.

Google is yuh future friend.

Hyperion....how is srp training different from TTPS training...I was told it's the same.

88....sadly they would have been taught proper procedures...but like yuh said ongoing training is fun other people.

At STRA there is a designated spot and clearing bin to make safe.

It's boggling me why the same isn't mandatory at all TTPS stations.

I hope the shooter gets the book thrown at him..and then gets beaten over the head with it.

There are sand bins at the stations to clear the firearms, having done so myself. What is odd though... nobody is daft enough to "clean" a loaded firearm thus it seems suspicious. Alternatively this is not the first such situation like this hence it leaves one to wonder how much criminal you does hear shooting people "accidentally" while cleaning firearm. Does this mean they are better "trained" or the maths don't add up. Just my 2 cents.

Well
a)apparently it isn't mandatory.
b)obviously there a few of them daft enough

c)The criminals probably don't clean their guns....or are more worried about AD.

Most srpz are reject school bullies, dont get me wrong, i know alot of highly educated, well behaved and serious srpz who serve beyond duty.....but i always wonder if continuous behavioural patters are observed by these 2 week trained officers...they do hold one of the most important jobs in this society, and shoulder alot of power

This is INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER and should be treated accordingly.
Hes not a child, he knew the risks of possessing a weapon, even if he did not mean to kill him, its still MAnslaughter.

Brz, yuh iz ah lawya?

Who going to financially support his wife and kids or parents or younger siblings? Jailing sum1 does not satisfy that need. Rather, his dependents will now have to quit school to work to feed themselves and pay taxes to feed, clothe and shelter the man who slaughtered him.

That's JUSTICE right?
