They are cameras.

Is it a trial then, because I have seen them only on some patrol cars?

Flashing but no tickets yet. Think government has more to do before they can issue them.

Speed traps in Trinidad have nothing to do with road safety. Right now it is money making . Not enough people driving fast on highway.

Speed traps in main roads in Penal, Siparia, Fyzabad, Santa Flora, Cunupia, Mon Desi highway ext. nearly every week.
As hong kong said, is all about making money and not safety.
Yes, it will have one or two a**hole on the highway driving over the limit but they will not be able to make much revenue there because a lot of people actually do obey the 100km\h limit on the highway.

Good to know that since they cannot (or choose not to) apprehend known corrupt politicians, community leaders, drug lords, other white collar criminals and murderers at least those "highly visible" law breakers on the roads will be brought to justice.

I see the cameras by the traffic lights at HYATT busy... bout time people start getting tickets for breaking the lights. maybe they should use cameras at Illegal u-turns too?? possible revenue being lost there too , and yuh know thats most important to this gubb.

Actually, speed traps on the main roads make a lot of sense. Main roads often run though heavily populated areas with vulnerable road users present (pedestrians, cyclists). Such road users are unlikely to survive a collision with a vehicle going over 50km/h. It's not just about protecting motorists. The roads need to be safe for other road users as well, otherwise everyone will be driving for safety's sake. At least this is how it works in developed countries (not the U.S)

What happens when pretty much everyone drives? We end up with too many cars/gridlock. And driving becomes a royal pain in the ass.

if the purpose was to slow down drivers, they woudl be there allthe time. but the purpose is to make money out of tickets, that is why they are set up in a way that does not influence the drivers to slow down, but rather catch them in the act of driving dangerously over the speed limit, inorder to charge.

I saw a FB post where someone was given a ticket for doing over 65 on the Uriah Butler.

Where on that highway is the speed limit 65? Wasn't it 80 on the mt Hope stretch?

I know there's a new (lower) limit near West Mall. Are there any other areas with new speed limits? I'm not seeing it on the ministry's site.
