Speed guns in effect in Trinidad & Tobago

Postby X-Axis » April 29th, 2016, 11:40 am

Speed guns are now the hands of the police, and will be employed from Monday.

The announcement was made Friday by the Minister of Works Fitzgerald Hinds.

The law is to be gazetted on Monday and as such will be in place to allow for citizens who violate it to be ticketed. The fine is $1,000.

Hinds warned however that the coming weekend is not to be taken as a free for all to speed on the nation’s roads.

Hind said most of the fatalities that occur on the nation’s roads are preventable and are almost always as a result of bad and distracted driving.

He said statistics from a pilot speed trap showed that when the limit was set at 80 kilometres miles per hour, more than 500 people were in violation in one location. Hinds said this was a significant step towards making the nation’s roads safer.

Hinds said he has not heard any public call for the 80 kilometre per hour limit to be increased.

The introduction of the speed guns was announced at a press conference at the Ministry of Works and Transport in Port of Spain.

Well according to ZR you iz a PNM. So this is all to force ppl to register for your drag meets, time attacks and rally racing. This is just to provide more money for the financiers like Trinituner and Syrians like the Amar's.

Now the poor man can't afford to speed in his Tiida. Only the rich Imbert can blow pass ppl in his Porsche Macan.

I most of the time do around 80kmph on highway and ppl just cutting me off and taking me over like normal..like wtf.
Majority of drivers doing more than 80kmph. I want to know what is lowest speed limit you can go as well since ppl driving slow can cause traffic and bottleneck.

Have the guns been calibrated properly?

GPS and smartphones w/b useful in determining this.

since the population would now be driving at 80kms....does this also include the escort for the ministers or is it a case of
all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.??"

I think there should be a discretionary approach to this or at least I hope .You can safely operate even the most primitive of vehicles up to about 100-110km/h so my hope is that while the limit is the limit a reasonable ticketing speed of let's say over 120 km/h is applied.

I wouldn't expect any law enforcement or govt rep to come out and say this but my hope is that they take that approach.

This where the revenue is, if it's the same 1k per ticket the govt will easily accrue almost 10,000 tickets monthly based on how we see drivers indiscriminately break red lights all over the place. The fines would easily pay for the installation at major traffic lights across the country within a year.

All the more reason to move to a electronic vehicle registration system so tickets come in the mail. Technically you don't even have to run down delinquent offenders for payment if you can tie the registration to an individual's driver permit. Jam everybody when they come for driver permit renewal or want to purchase a new vehicle for any unpaid tickets.

Driving from POS to Chaguanas this evening and i decided to look out for Signs to show what the speed limit is in various areas- highway, residential and main street/side street

I saw None!

I think this should be a pre-requirement before charging people for going over the speed limit- Have proper signage and also change the speed limits. 80km for highway is terrible.

i dont know what the law in the US is but there is a speed sign every few hundred meters

I was wondering about that.

I think in the US its 70 mph for the highway.. so about 113kph or so .

I agree with you, 80 is a bit too slow and yeah we need more signs.
