This generator good?

Postby RBphoto » September 26th, 2016, 9:42 am

Saw this in pricesmart and I want to get something like this that has parts and support locally. Is this a good brand and is there a dealer for it locally?Image

It really depends on what you want to power with it. Check that first then decide if it will work for you...also check the decibel level as its a 2 stroke.

I don't need much load capability, maybe 400W, but I need small and portable. Quieter would be better. Is there any small 4-stroke on the market?

i have this, worked for me, used it to power a fan, electric heater and a fluorescent 2 feet light. (not all the same time though).
It serves its purpose, portability was key, so thumbs up.

We have the 7000 w Honda generator to do light welding. It trips with the 110v stick welder, but it is just about that amount of current single line. 220v shouldn't be a problem.
But if we don't need to weld, just drills, saws etc we use a big 2000w inverter. It runs the 7 amp equipment good, I would say that 10 amps could work for short durations. The noise of the advan is preferable to the generator.

BUY locally from a dealer, there are certain things you should never buy from Pricesmart and one of those is a generator/

I have a Coleman power mate(Subaru engine) from them, works very well, use it for welding too
The powermates are very well reviewed compared to the Chinese no name engine generators

RB I bought about 6 months ago and it didn't last. Would recommend you look elsewhere if you really need one.

Well anybody know a local dealer who has something this size? (as in physical size, more power would not be a problem)

Check the reviews from Amazon on the unit.. for the price, the risk seems well worth it for those on a tight budget.

The 2000W Honda equivalent sells for around $8000 IIRC.

The Yamaha dealer has a 1000W model (ET1) for $2100 and a 2600W model for $5700. Call to confirm prices (contact 623-1221).

I'd personally go with the Yamaha for price / parts / reputation

Bought a grinder from them last week, 1 month warranty. But it is the cheapest and 6amps, so it will work.

depending on what credit card you use to purchase, the original manufacturer warranty can be used though

Yamaha is the original make of those products and after they a while they sell the rights to re produce thus you have a lot of these clones built in china for U.S. companies with limited warranties and no parts . At that price is buy and if not working throw away . The Yamaha dealer is on 71st vincent street . p.o.s. I have a yamaha generator over 4yrs now and not a day of problems and yes $2,100.00 is the price

If you are running an electrical drill or a few lights at a job site

Image

If you want a jobsite generator for a circular saw or demolition hammer

What are you going to use the generator for? I would advise you to pay attention to more or less well-known manufacturers of generators. Patriot, Yamaha, etc.? helpful resources

you could also go to an engine/wacker repair shop and ask their opinion of the engine reliability/parts of the ones on the market
they usually have a good idea

I checked pricesmart and FT Farfan's. I saw the pulsar, which i may get. but also interested in a bigger generator.
Pricesmart had a 4200 Watt generator, but no bigger. Farfan's only had a 1200 Watt one.

This generator will be used for welding, and other general stuff, so i would like it to have at least 5000 W.

Any other places carry generators that i can check out?

I am considering ordering them online and shipping them in.

Yeah pricesmart presently only have max 4250 sized
The 5000 will struggle to weld
Ideally you want min 6-7k
Starting the arc puts a big current surge
