Alright folks I collected the system from the skybox so when I set it up I'll post my reviews for others to note.

How did the freight + vat + customs + opt impact you vs buying a similar system locally?

Instead I bought the 1080p 2TB version from amazon for like $520. USD. I'm no network engineer but I visited a friend over the Christmas weekend and he has a recently installed Lorex IP camera system and he is getting lots of IP conflicts on his network and is yet to setup the FLIR cloud remote viewing as a result. I took the cheaper way out and got analogue. Will update when it arrives and is installed.

He needs to either manually enter the ips on each camera or activate dhcp on the host to provide the addresses

^^^^huh? them networking terms, you sound like those IT guys by me but I'll mention it to him.

Mad Hatter, see below:

Amazon Cost: $544. USD
Skybox Cost: $147. USD

Total TTD conversion: $4,699.

This is the Lorex 8-channel 8 1080p bullet camera with 2TB DVR system.

If the 8-channel 8 720p bullet cameras with 1TB DVR system in PriceSmart was $3,999. then I spent $700. TTD more for better resolution cameras with a bigger HDD. I can't recall ever seeing such a system locally yet so perhaps someone can lend a hand and let me know if what I paid was reasonable or not. If you want the $147. USD complete breakdown, I can do that for you.

I bought this system off amazon about 3 months now. Setup was easy considering it was the first time for me doing something like this. Everything was plug and play and color coded so it was hard to get it wrong. Remote viewing works excellent, app can be downloaded from google play and was free. I used the smallest electrical trunking with the sticky-back to run the wires so there are no exposed wires.
When i bought the system i paid US$200. At that time the 8 camera system costed more than buying two 4 camera systems so i ended up buying two of these 4 camera systems. The advantage is that you have 2 separate systems with 2 separate DVR's that you can place in different locations of your house. I bought two 50ft HDMI cables off amazon which i ran from the two DVRs to my two TVs. So i can just switch the HDMI input on the TV to view the cameras. I also had to run CAT5 cables from the DVRs to the modem to connect to the internet. All the BNC cables that came with the system was enough (60ft per camera). I usually use the app on my phone to view the cameras as it's more convenient to do so.
So far i have no issues with it and the system works perfectly. Video quality is excellent.

How high off the ground do you all recommend installing the camera?

High and out of reach? Or lower and more at eye level?

So I have two high up...8-10 ft that cover the parking area and yard, that covers approach to the front door.

I have the motion sensor/ record/ alarm set to ignore the trees and alarm/ record if some one walks past.

At my front door I have it at 6 ft...in order to capture faces on any one approaching the door.

At the gate entrance I stood on the back of a hilux ( not in the tray but on the tailgate) and installed above my head...So that would be 10-12 ft.
That gives me the full entry point, and road area.
Again zoned to trigger only if someone walks onto my driveway.

I used my 6 year old son to adjust...that way we also know if he galavanting out the gate.

Spot the camera s to get what you need.

Also depends on the quality of your camera and it's field of view.

Lower to capture faces at points of entrance but not so low that it's easy to disable.

its best to buy your own cameras and DVR to suit. stargate in curepe RHD in maraval...amazon... integrated solutions in st Augustine / barataria...

HIKvision is good quality they are 720p models as well as 1080p cameras some can do both analog and digital via a little press button switch...

the HIKvision DVR is also good supports a wide array of digital cameras and types - fixed lens varifocal etc
it can also be networked as well. the really good HIK vision DVR may not support analog cameras :!:

dont also limit yourself to HIKvision - if you want more theres also vivotek

for example
http://www.vivotek.com/ma8391-etv/#view ... -grid-view

things i would advise
1. invest in a 9/ 16 channel power supply module instead of 4 AC to DC power adapters with Y splitters to make up the 8 camera power jacks.

2. invest in a charge board and a rechargeable battery - could be a simple small gel battery << keeps system online when power goes

3. determine what you want to see and buy cameras accordingly. - if you just need to keep an eye out buy regular 720p cameras if you want to make out faces / number plates buy 1080p vari-focal and install to suit

4. use a DVR hard drive in your DVR & NOT a regular desktop unit.
DVR HDD is designed for continuous use and has a large cache to assist with data to be written / play back.

5. if goine POE you will need additional hardware - POE injector POW switch and such

6. choose your rating wisely
IP65 Enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against water projected from a nozzle.
IP66 Enclosure - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water.
IP 67 Enclosures - IP rated as "dust tight" and protected against immersion.

7 use quality shielding / interconnects and necessary piping to protect the cable run.

anythin else you need feel free to ask.....

Bought this back in May on sale for 900usd, cost either 800 or 1200 TTD to clear. Wil have to check the receipt form the skybox.
Works pretty well and install was easy.

HIK vision is the consumer choice for high end video recording and retrieval.
there are others out there like vivotek and such but for consumer level HIK vision is the thing.

Good HD quality.

what kills DVRs is not soo much the DVR poor quality is more like poor tech information and trying to cut costs.

1. ventilation.
DVR is supposed to be properly ventilated - most ppl tend to lock a DVR away for security - but the thing is where u put it is not ventilated & as u wold know heat and electronics dont mix - esp if its something that u need running 24/7

2. poor HDD.
regular desktop HDD ( western digital blue series) is cheaper than the correct DVR / NVR hard drive....
western digital blue - pc use
western digital black - high performance pc use
western digital red - NAS (network attached storage use
western digital purple - surveillance DVR use
western digital Gold - server storage / RAID use

3.incorrect power / hi boltage / low voltage - self explainatory no UPS etc.

4 . no maintenance schedule -
every 6 mths open it clean out the fans etc once a yr do a full format of the hard drive to ensure the drive isnt attempting to use failing / failed sectors
camera maintenance is simply windex and a jay cloth to clean d lens.

if you can resolve the above issues in your own DVR setup your DVR will last you years - the only thing you'll have to do is every 4-5 yrs change the hard drive....

this option might suit some people

https://nest.com/cameras/

everything is stored on the cloud, live updates to your phone and smart watch.
up to 30 day recording saved
quickly save video clips to your phone photo gallery.

HD and 4K with HDR.

Smart camera can track specific sections of the image and can alert if it senses someone talking, person moving, activity etc
has Face ID so it can tell you if there is a stranger in your yard or family
it can even alert you if it heard a dog barking

Image

built in microphone and speaker for two way communication.

runs on wifi and USB power, will even run off of a USB portable charger or battery pack.

works with Alexa and OK Google

free for no cloud storage

A subscription that covers 10 days of continuously recorded video costs $10 a month or $100 a year for the first camera. Each additional camera costs $5 a month or $50 a year. A 30 day history costs $30 a month for the first camera, or $300 for the year.

10 days is fine for most ppl I think

looks good but may not be applicable for our local market
reasons
1. it needs to be plugged in if power goes it goes offline - DVR without any back up battery / UPS solution also have this issue
( as of late burglars are resorting to cutting the cable / phone / fibre line to the home and removing the T&TEC meter from the meter base)

2. needs steady internet connection in order to store live recordings to the cloud ( no net access no storage - unless theres a built in memory card to handle a couple hrs of net down time)

3. in order to "save" recordings you need to purchase an account with cloud storage

See below in blue

Can I review video without a Nest Aware subscription?>

During the free trial period, you and other people who have shared access to your home can review recorded video. However, if you don’t purchase a Nest Aware subscription when the trial ends, your camera will no longer record and store video to the cloud. Your recorded video history will expire and be deleted as soon as the trial ends. Without a subscription for your camera, you’ll still get snapshots in your Sightline when your camera detects sound or motion (up to 3 hours into the past), but you will only be able to stream and view that camera’s live footage and any video clips that you’ve saved to your Nest Account.

4. recurring fees for service - it is also based on how much cameras.

looks nice... but all that flash and you have to constantly pay and pay and pay....better to just get a DVR and pay for cloud storage. some places offer as little as 25 usd for 500GB of online storage....now it may be even less money per TB of storage...
